Ottawa County dedicates new park June 27

Ottawa County dedicates new park June 27

HOLLAND, Mich.—A new park is opening in Holland.

Macatawa Greenspace will be dedicated Thursday, June 27. The event will also feature disc golf demonstrations and nature stations, along with light refreshments and food available for purchase.

Macatawa Greenspace is located at 1230 Paw Paw Drive, the former home of Holland Country Club.  The 122 acre site features an 18 hole disc golf course, 2.5 miles of trails, scenic overlooks, bridges, boardwalks, picnic tables and rustic toilets.

Macatawa Greenspace was also designed to improve the water quality of Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan.  When Ottawa County purchased the land in 2010, workers began restoring the site’s original, native flood plain forests and wetlands, which filter out sediment and pollutants before water enters rivers and lakes.  Wetlands also help control possible floods, soaking up and storing extra water.

Thursday’s dedication event runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Five local pools host World's Largest Swimming Lesson

Swimmers filled five West Michigan pools on June 18 to try to make history.

This is the fourth year for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson—an event aimed at raising awareness about water safety, while trying to set the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swim lesson worldwide.

An employee of the Holland Aquatics Center says about 105 children took part in this year’s event at their location; that’s more than double the number of participants they had last year.  Participants also took part at the East Grand Rapids High School Pool, the Kentwood Public Schools Aquatic Center, and Full Blast in Battle Creek.  MVP Athletic Club also welcomed 30 participants, ranging in age from two years to 75 years.  This is the third year MVP Athletic Club has taken part in the event.
