Harlem Wizards game to take place despite foul weather

Zeeland, MI - The game between The Poultry Panic and The Harlem Wizards will take place tonight at 7pm as scheduled. All tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Harlem Wizards come to Zeeland October 26

The Harlem Wizards bring their tricks, hoops, and alley oops to the Zeeland West High School gym Tuesday, October 26, as a fund raiser sponsored by the Quincy Elementary PTO. Hope College Homecoming Celebration Runs Oct. 22-24

HOLLAND – A variety of activities have been scheduled for the annual Homecoming Weekend at Hope College, running Friday-Sunday, Oct. 22-24.

Highlights include the return of the long-running Run-Walk, the 100-year celebration of the Delta Phi sorority, the presentation of a Young Alumni Award during the Homecoming Celebration Brunch, a tailgate picnic for alumni, and reunions for the classes of 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005.  The weekend is expected to bring hundreds of alumni back to campus.

Many of the Homecoming events are open to the public.

Author and educational consultant Sheila Tobias will present the address “Teachers’ Authority vs. Teacher Accountability:  Must We Choose?” on Friday, Oct. 22, at 3 p.m. in the Maas Center auditorium as the 2010 Gentile Interdisciplinary Lecture.  Admission is free.
The Hope College Faculty Jazz Group with Edye Evans-Hyde will perform on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Zeeland East stays perfect with win over Unity Christian

ZEELAND (WZZM) -- Brad Horling scored three times and the Zeeland East Chix overcame a slow start to top Unity Christian, 34-14.

The Chix scored first when Josiah Brown picked off Crusader QB Max Zemaitis and returned it for a score. Zeeland East led 7-0 at halftime.

Two touchdown runs from Horling brought the lead to 21-0. Keegan Denuyl followed with a touchdown run of his own to make it 27-0 and the Chix rolled from there.

Men’s Soccer to Host Purple Game for Cancer Research

On Tuesday, October 12, the Hope College men's soccer team will host a Community for a Cure Purple Game in support of cancer research at Van Andel Institute (VAI). The game, against rival Olivet, begins at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Since April 2009, high schools, colleges, and communities throughout the state have raised more than $150,000 for cancer research at Van Andel Institute through Community for a Cure Purple Games.

Hope College has been a huge supporter; last year Hope College football, women's soccer, and volleyball teams raised $12,500 for the initiative.

Hope players will wear purple jerseys during the game, and there will be purple T-shirts, wristbands, water bottles, reusable grocery bags, and cotton candy for sale. Attendees also will have an opportunity to participate in a chilidog eating contest, hosted by WLAV Radio Personality Kevin Mathews.

3rd Annual Labor Day Paw Paw Bridge Walk

Please join us for the 3rd Annual Paw Paw Bridge Walk this Labor Day. The walk will start at approximately 9:30 AM - or after the Truck Parade leaves Zeeland - whichever is later (for more info on the Michigan Works Labor Day Truck Parade, please see below). This spoof walk will be complete with a mock stretching station before departure and a refreshing water station mid-way through the walk. Participants will enjoy punch and cookies upon completion of the walk. Certificates will be awarded to the first 29 participants (1 for each yard of the Paw Paw Bridge).
