“Sundays at 2” Series to Feature Faculty Trio on March 13 at Hope College

News Release:

HOLLAND – The “Sundays at 2” recital series coordinated by the department of music at Hope College will feature clarinetist Joel Schekman, violist Barb Corbató and pianist Adam Clark on Sunday, March 13, at 2 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The faculty trio will be performing “Selection from 8 Pieces for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano, Op. 83,” by Bruch; “Passacaglia for Viola and Piano,” by Rebecca Clarke; “Petite Piece for Clarinet and Piano,” by Debussy; and the “Kegelstatt” trio, by Mozart.

Barbara Corbató is viola instructor at Hope and Calvin colleges, and the assistant principal viola of the Grand Rapids Symphony, where she has performed since 1990. In addition, she is an active chamber musician, performing with the Perugino String Quartet.

Zeeland juniors will be taking the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) March 1, 2, and 3. State guidelines for administering the test are very strict and require that juniors not be interrupted in any way during testing. Therefore, the class schedule for Zeeland East and West is altered:

  • March 1 - Juniors only, testing 7:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m.; NO SCHOOL for freshmen, sophomores and seniors; seniors only attend AM & PM Careerline Tech Center (CTC)
  • March 2 - Juniors testing 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; freshmen and sophomores report to assembly at 7:30 a.m. in auditorium followed by assigned rooms; hours 1, 2 and 3 begin at 10:50 a.m. for all students; Seniors attend AM CTC only
  • March 3 - Juniors testing 7:30 a.m.

HOLLAND – The annual International Food Fair at Hope College will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

West Ottawa jazz band honors

West Ottawa jazz band honors

West Ottawa High School’s top jazz band is celebrating a new honors.

The group took third place for outstanding jazz band in Class AA at Central Michigan University’s jazz festival on February 11.

 Guitarist Kellen Boersma also took home a second place trophy for outstanding soloist in the same class. 

About 50 students are enrolled in jazz; 18 of those students are in Jazz I, the school’s top jazz band.
