My Town: New Holland Brewing celebrates expansion

HOLLAND, Mich.— New Holland Brewing is celebrating its newly expanded business.

Monday, the brewery opened its new 1,600 square-foot merchandise store and tasting room, called Sidecar.  The new storefront is located next to New Holland’s pub on East 8th Street in downtown Holland.

Visitors to Sidecar can check out New Holland’s full line of merchandise, as well as a variety of beer and spirits to go.  The tasting room is expected to open later this month.

"This is a great opportunity for us to move our merchandise to an adjacent space where people can browse without feeling crowded," says Dave White, vice president of retail operations. "Additionally, it’s a great place for customers to hang out and grab a drink if they’re waiting for a table at the pub."

Sidecar will be open seven days a week.  The space will also be used for beer and spirits release parties.

HOLLAND, Mich.—Holland would be home to a “Food Innovation District”, under a design plan recently revealed by the Michigan Municipal League.

The PlacePlan project focuses on Holland’s Western Gateway, around the farmers market and civic center building.  The plan calls for extending downtown Holland and linking it to the Lake Macatawa waterfront with a new district focused on the area’s food industry.  The plan also identifies opportunities for new business growth in and around downtown, as well as expansion of the area’s cultural, economic and environmental assets. The design is meant to encourage economic development around a walkable downtown district.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Knock back a beer and help knock out cancer this month with “Hops for Hope.”

During September, several West Michigan breweries will be donating $1 from each “purple beer” purchase to Van Andel Institute’s Purple Community.  Proceeds from sales of Hops for Hope growlers and refills will also go to the cause.

“It’s good to give back to the community,” Bob Bonga, owner of the family-owned and operated Jaden James Brewery in Kentwood. “It’s wonderful that VAI is in Grand Rapids, and 100% of what we raise goes to research.”

My Town: IHOP celebrates birthday with $0.56 dining deal

KENTWOOD, Mich.—The International House of Pancakes is celebrating its birthday by serving up a deal to diners.

On July 8, participating restaurants will celebrate IHOP’s 56th anniversary by offering up a short stack of buttermilk pancakes for $0.56.  That’s four cents less than the price of a short stack when the restaurant was founded.

In 1958, Al and Jerry Lapin opened their first IHOP in Toluca Lake, California.   That year, only three major television stations were on the air, a gallon of regular gas cost $0.24 and the hula hoop had just been invented.

IHOP now operates 1,627 restaurants in every state, as well as nine countries and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The short stack deal will be available at participating restaurants from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8.  IHOP has restaurants at the following locations:
