Animals take over final Parkapalooza Park Party August 8

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The final Parkapalooza Park Party is guaranteed to be wild.

Join the staff of East Grand Rapids Library at John Collins Park for the “Animal Extravaganza”, featuring wildlife from the John Ball Zoo, the Kalamazoo Nature Center and the Critter Barn of Zeeland.  Children of all ages are also invited to take part in crafts during this free event.

 The Animal Extravaganza runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, August 8.  John Collins Park is located at 650 Lakeside Dr. SE.

Communities celebrate National Night Out August 6

National Night Out is August 6, providing community members a free and fun opportunity to meet neighbors and local police officers.

National Night Out started in1984 as a way to encourage the community to get involved in crime-prevention, sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.  Organizers often fold food and family-friendly activities into the event.  This year’s participating communities include:

·         Kalamazoo: Arcadia Neighborhood Assoc., Arcadia School, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

·         Kalamazoo: Eastside Neighborhood Assoc., Rockwell Park, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

·         Kalamazoo: Edison Neighborhood Assoc., 816 Washington, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

ZEELAND, Mich.-- Although Pumpkinfest has been a staple in Zeeland for nearly three decades, this is the first year it's an independent organization.

Formerly part of the Zeeland Chamber of Commerce, Pumpkinfest is now part of Zeeland Festivals Inc., a 501 c3 non-profit group. Directed by Carla Flanders of CMF Marketing, the 2013 Pumpkinfest promises to be just as fun and family-friendly as ever.

Should Ottawa County eliminate its road commission?

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich.--  Ottawa County residents are encouraged to weigh in on plans to handle county roads Tuesday, July 23.

The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is considering taking over the responsibility of county roads and public utilities.  Michigan is the only state to still have road commissions.  Last week, the Board of Commissioners released nearly a year’s worth of research and findings by The Road Commission Task Force.  The task force’s three proposed plans include:

Knickerbocker Theatre announces free summer film series

HOLLAND, Mich.  – Hope College is again offering a free summer film series at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.

The films run on Thursdays, from July 25 to August 15, at 7:30 p.m. The times coincide with the Holland downtown street performer series, creating a full night of entertainment for families.

The film series will open with Stephen Spielberg’s “The Goonies” on Thursday, July 25. The adventure/comedy film features a group of kids embarking on a wild quest after finding a pirate treasure map. With their homes facing foreclosure to make room for a golf course expansion, this group of children decides to have one last fun, “goonie adventure.” In the end, the map shows them far more than the treasure they envisioned. The film, from 1985, is rated PG.
