Haveman plans in-district meetings to listen to residents

Hudsonville, Mich. - State Rep. Joe Haveman, R-Holland, has set up in-district office hours to meet with residents and listen to their ideas and suggestions regarding state and local issues.

"Listening to the people in my community and hearing what solutions they may have for some of the issues we are facing in Michigan is one of the vital parts of my job as a lawmaker," said Haveman. "I always look forward to meeting with residents, and I hope that plenty of folks are able to join me for these office hours."

Haveman will be available to talk with residents on Friday, March 25 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. He will be at the Blendon Township Hall, located at 7161 72nd Ave. in Hudsonville.

Next month Haveman will host in-district office hours on Monday, April 11 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. These will take place at the Mr. Burger restaurant located at 5835 Balsam Drive in Hudsonville. No appointment is necessary for either time or location.

Hope College Model United Nations Scheduled for March 10-11

Hope College will host its 39th annual Model United Nations conference for high school students on Thursday and Friday, March 10-11.

More than 700 students and faculty from the greater Midwest will compete in the various simulations, making the event the largest Model United Nations conference in Michigan.

Acting as delegates from the 192 member nations of the United Nations in two General Assemblies, eight Security Councils, an International Court of Justice (ICJ), and an Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the students will be faced with issues pertaining to the current international affairs.

Issues that will be included in this year’s conference include endangered species and the loss of biodiversity, the international drug trade, global currency, the Internet and human rights, global vaccinations, and the human rights of migrants.

The purpose of Model United Nations is to give high school students an opportunity to take on the roles of profession

State Rep. Amanda Price has updated her in-district office hours.

In Grand Haven, Price will host district hours on the third Friday of every month, starting on Friday, Feb. 18. These meetings will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Coffee Grounds, located at 41 Washington Ave. #180.

And in Holland, Price will host district hours on the third Monday of every month, beginning on Monday, Feb. 21. These will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. at Park Township Hall, located at 52 152nd Ave.

Haveman sworn in for second term, receives committee assignments

LANSING, Mich. - State Rep. Joe Haveman, R-Holland, was sworn into office at the Capitol today at noon, officially taking his place as a member of the 96th state legislature, representing Michigan's 90th House District.

This is Haveman's second term in the state House. His wife Kim joined him today at the ceremony. Following seat selection, the newly elected Speaker of the House gave a brief speech.

"The Speaker definitely set the tone for the year. His best line was 'long term gains with short term pains,'" Haveman said. "I think both sides are ready to buckle down and work together."

Committee assignments were also distributed today. Haveman was placed on the Energy and Technology Committee and will serve as vice chair of the Appropriations Committee. Within Appropriations, he will act as chair of the Corrections subcommittee.

HOLLAND, Mich – When the second decade of the 21st century dawns January 1, the Ottawa County Republicans will sport a new leader for the pivotal 2012 Presidential election. Current Chairman Brad Slagh of Zeeland Township, who chose not to seek re-election, announced the party’s 44-member executive committee has elected Zeeland attorney Adam Tountas as its chair for the next two years.

“The contest for the chairperson position was particularly livelym," Slagh said. "That interest speaks to the values Republicans emphasized in the 2010 election campaign and that were thoroughly embraced throughout Michigan and much of the nation."

Tountas, 32, was elevated from the party’s executive committee to its chairman’s post.  With his wife and daughter, Tountas lives in Jenison (Georgetown Township).

Huizenga Agrees to Six Debates


Zeeland, Mich. - U.S. Representative-candidate Bill Huizenga (R-Zeeland) today announced the agreement of six debates that cover the entire Second Congressional District.

"Voters across the Second District will have several opportunities to hear for themselves our distinctly different visions for our country," said Huizenga. "I look forward to discussing the issues and informing voters about our positions, principles and values."
