Hope College Pre-Veterinary Student Group Receives National Award

  HOLLAND – The Club Animalia student organization at Hope College has received the national “Outstanding Community Service Award” from the American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association (APVMA).

                        The award was presented during the association’s 2013 Annual Symposium, held on Friday-Sunday, March 1-3, at the University of Florida in Gainesville.  More than 500 students from more than 60 colleges and universities from throughout the United States and Canada attended the event.

                        The club’s advisor, Dr. Gregory Fraley, noted that the recognition is especially remarkable because the competition for it included much larger programs.

Holland dog wins at Westminster Dog Show

A dog from Holland has won best of breed at this year’s Westminster Dog Show.

“Riverwatch Grand Illusion” is a nine-year-old curly-coated retriever. Her owners are Gary and Mary Meek of Holland.

A five-year-old Russell Terrier from Sawyer, Michigan also won best of breed Tuesday.  “Goldsand’s Columbus” is owned by Mark Ulrich and Kristina Areskough.

Both dogs will compete in their respective groups 8 p.m. Tuesday. If they win again, they will continue on to the best of show competition.

The Westminster Dog Show runs through February 19.

Ottawa Animal Hospital Achieves High Level of Veterinary Excellence

LAKEWOOD, CO—Ottawa Animal Hospital has again achieved the highest level of veterinary excellence following a thorough evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Ottawa Animal Hospital earned AAHA accreditation after a rigorous review of the hospital’s practice protocols, medical equipment, facility and client service.

Dog Pet owners are encouraged to bring their dog to march as a group in the Zeeland Magical Christmas Parade on Monday, November 26 as part of the Jingle Bell Dog Trot. The first 50 dogs on site will be given jingle bells from Pack Leader, Jami.  Jingle Trot participants are asked to line up 6:15pm in front of City Side Middle School located at 320 East Main Street in Zeeland. The parade begins promptly at 6:30pm.

Three local students named National Merit Finalists

Three local students named National Merit Finalists


West Ottawa High School students Elizabeth Csaszar, Lucy Davis and Michaela Lohman have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

The three were selected from among 16,000 semifinalists representing less than one percent of all graduating seniors in the country.

Csaszar, the daughter of Alex Csaszar and Melinda Wilkens, is an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate and AP Scholar.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and the technical crew for the theatre department. Next fall, Elizabeth plans on attending Michigan Technological University and major in biomedical engineering.
