Memoir Reflects on Face Blindness, Family and Forgiveness

HOLLAND – In her newly published memoir “You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know: A True Story of Family, Face Blindness, and Forgiveness,” Dr. Heather Sellers of the Hope College English faculty explores how an apparent handicap turned out to be a remarkable gift that allowed her to “see” people as they truly were and gave her unexpected insights into the nature of family, forgiveness and love.
The book is being released on Thursday, Oct. 14, by Riverhead Books.  The publication will be celebrated locally with a book launch party on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Huizenga Agrees to Six Debates


Zeeland, Mich. - U.S. Representative-candidate Bill Huizenga (R-Zeeland) today announced the agreement of six debates that cover the entire Second Congressional District.

"Voters across the Second District will have several opportunities to hear for themselves our distinctly different visions for our country," said Huizenga. "I look forward to discussing the issues and informing voters about our positions, principles and values."

Below are the scheduled debates:

. October 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Hope College DeWitt Theatre, sponsored by the Holland League of Women Voters, Hope College Student Republicans and Hope College Student Democrats.
. October 21 at 7:00 p.m. at West Shore Community College Center Stage Theater sponsored by Ludington Daily News.
. October 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Spring Lake Library, sponsored by the Grand Haven and Spring Lake League of Women Voters.
. October 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Coming to Holland, Yoda Is


Grand Rapids, Mich. – Sept. 29  Famous voice actor Tom Kane will appear at the "Animation Celebration" animation film festival on December 4 at the Knickerbocker Theater in Holland, Mich.

Kane, best known for voicing the iconic character, Yoda, in the hit Cartoon Network show "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", has a career that spans over fifteen years.

His voice has also been featured in numerous popular animated television shows including "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends", "Kim Possible", "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy", and "Robot Chicken", as well as many video games.

"It is wonderful to have a person of Tom's stature at the 'Animation Celebration' event," said event coordinator Mark Hodges. "This will be a great opportunity for kids and fans to meet one of the busiest voice actors in the country.

Stephanie Milanowski Appointed to Sluyter Professorship at Hope College

HOLLAND - Stephanie Milanowski of the Hope College art and art history faculty has been appointed to the college's Howard R. and Margaret E. Sluyter Endowed Professorship in the field of design.

Milanowski joined the Hope faculty in the fall of 2009 as an assistant professor of art.  Her appointment to the endowed professorship began with the start of the new school year, and will be celebrated with a formal investiture ceremony on Friday, Sept.

Holland Police Department promotions

From the Holland Police Department - The Holland Police Department announces the promotions of Officer Shaun Tubergen and Sergeant Jeff Velthouse.

Sergeant Velthouse has been promoted to Captain of Administrative Services and replaces Captain Rick Walters who now leads the Criminal Investigations Unit. Velthouse is a graduate of Holland Christian High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Valley State University.

He started with the department as a cadet in 1981 and was hired as a full time Officer in 1984.  He was promoted to Senior Officer in 1989 and served as an Evidence Technician until 1994 when he was promoted to Sergeant.  Velthouse also served for 3 years in the Criminal Investigative Unit as a Detective Sergeant. He lives in the Holland area with his wife Sherry and their son Josh.
