Public reception May 24 to honor Zeeland Superintendent Feenstra

News Release:

A public reception honoring Superintendent Gary L. Feenstra's 18 years of service to Zeeland Public Schools is set for Tuesday, May 24, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Zeeland West High School cafeteria. Refreshments will be served. The event provides an opportunity for parents, students and citizens to meet with Gary prior to his retirement.

"I can say with all honesty that this job has been the most wonderful work experience of my life," Feenstra said when announcing his retirement last December.  

Feenstra, 60, was hired as superintendent in August, 1993, from a field of 45 candidates.  He came to the job with 18 years experience as principal for Holland Public Schools at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. He also taught for one year in Holland and two years in Indiana.

2nd District, MI - U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, invites all high school students interested in serving their country through one of the United States Service Academies to the informational Academy Night Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Holland. Refreshments will be served.
 
Students and their parents will have a chance to meet liaison officers and talk to Huizenga’s staff about the application process for admission to one of these military academies during this casual evening.

Bria (Ebels) DeBoer is named Zeeland East varsity girls' basketball coach

Bria (Ebels) DeBoer is named Zeeland East varsity girls' basketball coach

Bria (Ebels) DeBoer is taking over coaching duties for the Zeeland varsity girls' basketball team.  She succeeds Bob Rilley who stepped down this spring after 20 years of coaching the Chix.

"We are thrilled to have Bria take on the position," Zeeland East Athletic Director Tim Ritsema said. "She will make a very seamless transition afer serving here as our freshmen and JV basketball coach.  The girls like her and respect her. Bria will continue the quality program established by Bob Rilley."

DeBoer brings a wealth of basketball experience to the position.  She was a standout cager for the Hope College women's team from 2002 through 2006 and served two years as the team's captain, including Hope's national championship team of 2006.  DeBoer was named Defense Player of the Year in 2006; was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player the same year; and was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" edition in April, 2006.

Waukazoo Elementary secretary Suzanne Coney and teacher Lynne Gallagher couldn’t help but tear up when Cathy Courey explained to Gallagher’s third-grade class on Wednesday that there is no cure for diabetes.

Coney and Gallagher have both been touched by the disease – Gallagher has a daughter with Type 1 diabetes and Coney helps two students in Gallagher’s class deal with the disease every single day.

Courey, executive director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Great Lakes West Chapter, wasn’t telling either woman anything they didn’t know.

West Ottawa High School student wins Congressional Art Competition

This weekend, Jacob Wildfong, a junior at West Ottawa High School, was announced as the winner of the 2nd District’s 2011 Congressional Art Competition for his abstract digital photograph, “Flicker.”
 
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, MI-02, attended the reception this Saturday morning at the Holland Area Arts Council, where he met with competition finalists and helped announce the winner, as decided by a four-judge panel of art and design professionals. Dr. David McGee, Professor of Art at GVSU, represented the judges and joined with Huizenga in announcing this year’s winner. The panel also included Katherine Sullivan, Professor of Art, Hope College; Nate Young, President, NewNorth Center, Former Provost of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA; and Andrew Bartlett, Lead Designer, Tiara Yachts.
