Holland, Michigan - Deanna DePree, Director of Deanna’s Playhouse will be speaking at the Lakeshore Republican Women’s monthly meeting held at the Fillmore Center, 12220 Fillmore, West Olive, Michigan.

Ms. DePree is a long time community and state wide advocate for parents and children in the area of early learning and will be speaking about how parents and grandparents can be involved in the development of young lives. She will share how her organization “Life Services Parent Center” works to accomplish this goal.

Interested people are invited to join the Lakeshore Republican Women for a luncheon at the Fillmore Center on Monday, September 12, 2011 from 12:00pm – 1:30pm.  The cost is $10.00 per person.

We are pleased to announce that an Open House will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011 to enable the community to help celebrate the retirement of Holland City Manager, Soren Wolff.
Soren served as Assistant City Manager from 1975-1979, and as City Manager from 1988-2011.  This is the perfect opportunity for us to come together and share our appreciation for his combined 27 years of dedicated service to the Holland community.
Please join the Mayor Dykstra, the Holland City Council, and City staff as we offer our well-wishes to Soren on Thursday, September 1, from 3 PM - 5:30 PM, in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 270 South River Avenue.  Light refreshments will be served.

Graham Peaslee and Charlotte vanOyen-Witvliet Named to Professorships

HOLLAND – Long-time faculty members Dr. Graham F. Peaslee and Dr. Charlotte vanOyen-Witvliet have both been appointed to endowed professorships at Hope College, succeeding colleagues whose tenure in the positions has concluded.

Peaslee has been appointed the Elmer E. Hartergink Professor of Chemistry.  vanOyen-Witvliet has been appointed the John H. and Jeanne M. Jacobson Professor of Psychology.

In addition to recognizing faculty members for excellence, endowed chairs provide funding for summer research projects as well as some salary support.  The college has a total of 20 endowed chairs for faculty and three endowed administrative positions.

West Ottawa names finance director


West Ottawa Schools has selected the former director of finance for Holland Public Schools as its new assistant superintendent of finance.

James English, who has been Holland’s finance director since last August, was chosen to fill the vacancy that was created when David Zimmer retired as West Ottawa’s assistant superintendent of finance in August of 2010.

“He brings a wealth of school finance expertise to us,” said West Ottawa Superintendent Tom Martin. “Jim is highly regarded in school circles as an expert in school finance and we’re really excited about his joining us.”

Wendi Carpenter arrested in Colorado Springs, CO


Wendi Carpenter of Holland was arrested on the parental kidnapping warrant issued back on July 27, 2011.  Carpenter was located by the Colorado Springs, CO police and arrested without incident.  The children, Luke and Cambria Carpenter were with Wendi at the time of her arrest.  The children have been turned over to their father immediately following the arrest. Carpenter was arrested without incident and the children were not physically harmed.

Holland detectives have been tracking Carpenter for several weeks and working with her attorney to arrange for the children to be turned over to their father, who has court ordered physical custody of the children and to turn herself in..  Carpenter was released on bond today and has been given a court date of August 30, 2011 to appear at the 58th District Court in Holland for her arraignment of 2 counts of custodial interference (parental kidnapping).

National Radio Program to Feature Hope College Organist
A performance by organist Dr. Huw Lewis of the Hope College music faculty will be featured beginning the week of Monday, Aug. 22, on "Pipedreams," American Public Radio's syndicated weekly program of organ music.

The broadcast will be of Lewis's premiere performance in May 2000 of "Invocation and Dance," a composition for organ and orchestra by Alfred V. Fedak. The concert, which took place at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Albany, N.Y., featured Lewis and the Franciscan Chamber Orchestra directed by the Brazilian conductor Lanfranco Marcelletti, and was part of the Siena College Music Series.

"Invocation and Dance," a 10-minute work, was commissioned by Siena College. It will be the final work of seven on the two-hour "Pipedreams" broadcast, which is titled "In Concert."

Claudia Hayes-Hagar of Hope College Art Faculty Dies



HOLLAND – Claudia Hayes-Hagar, a long-time art educator who was a part-time lecturer at Hope College in art and education for 14 years, died on Sunday, August 8, at age 59 following a battle with cancer.


She joined the Hope faculty in 1997, teaching courses in art and education with an emphasis on elementary art instruction in addition to teaching in the West Ottawa Public Schools.


Hayes-Hagar was a 1974 graduate of Hope, where she majored in art education.  She had also done graduate work at Harvard University and Grand Valley State University in art education and curriculum development.


She spent most of her career as an elementary art teacher.  She was at Reeths-Puffer Elementary School from 1984 to 1989 and then with the West Ottawa Public Schools, retiring from Waukazoo Elementary School in 2010.
