2015 Firefighter of the Year and 2015 Police Officer of the Year

On February 9, 2016, Firefighter Jim Ruiz, a 29 year veteran of the Department was named the 2015 Firefighter of the Year and K-9 Officer, Joe Slenk, a 14 year veteran of the Department was named 2015 Police Officer of the Year, both announced by Chief Messer. They were nominated by their peers & selected by the Command Staff to receive theses honors.

In 1987, Jim Ruiz started his career as a paid on-call firefighter with the Holland Fire Department. In 1997, he was selected as a full time Firefighter/EMT. His duty now is with the Waverly Road Fire Station, along with continuing to serve as a role model.

He is recognized by his peers for his ethical responsibilities & pride for the Department & the community.

Miranda Kirsch of Zeeland receives Lake Trust Credit Union Scholarship

Miranda Kirsch of Zeeland, MI was the recent recipient of a $1000 Scholarship given by Lake Trust Credit Union of Holland, MI. Each year the Credit Union awards 10 Scholarships to students planning on attending a college in Michigan. This year they received 157 applications.

David Snodgrass, the Credit Union President and CEO, states that, “Throughout our experience, we’ve heard a lot of truly remarkable stories from students all across Michigan. We are inspired by each student’s commitment to their future and honored to be a part of their pathway to educational success.”

Lake Trust announces their scholarship program at the first of the year and accepts applications through the end of February. A team is assembled that reviews each and every application. Scholarship recipients are community-minded students who exemplify the Credit Union’s core values of Trust, Teamwork, Adaptability, Learning and Making a Difference.

USS Silversides Museum presents Great Lakes Film Series in July

USS Silversides Museum in Muskegon, Michigan will be presenting a series of films titled, Great Lakes Film Series: Storms, Shipwrecks, Rescues and History.

This series of four films will be presented on Wednesdays in July at 11:00am and then again at 2:30pm, beginning Wednesday, July 8, 2015, with Ric Mixter as creator and producer of the series of intriguing Great Lakes documentaries. He produced the outstanding video “Storm.” Below is the schedule for the series:

July 8: Cutter Rescues: Video and interviews of Coast Guard Members and crews rescued during perilous storms.

July 15: Edmund Fitzgerald: History and video of the birth and then the death of this ship on November 10, 2010 on the Great Lakes.

July 22: Bombs Away: A documentary about the closure of Selfridge Air Base and the departure of the bombers is shown and narrated.

July 29: Best of the Depth: Lake Michigan

Historical Pump House in Holland open for Tours each Month this Summer

Historical Pump House in Holland open for Tours each Month this Summer

History buffs will certainly to want to check out the Pump House in Holland, MI. located directly north of the US Coast Guard Station at 2388 Ottawa Beach Rd. The Pump House will be open to the public on the third Thursday of each month from 3 – 5pm beginning June 18. The following dates will be July 16, August 20 and September 17.

Free parking is available in both the Black Lake Boardwalk’s east and west parking lots at 2278 Black Lake Ave. and 2358 Ottawa Beach Rd.

Since the dedication of this building in May was so popular, the Historic Ottawa Beach Society (HOBS) and Ottawa County Parks decided to provide the public with more opportunities to view the interior of the historic Pump House building over the summer.

The art in the building will still be on the walls for guests to enjoy. The SOBS is working to set up a historical storyteller for the July through September dates.

Pentwater Arts & Crafts Fair on the Village Green

On July 11, 2015, the Pentwater Jr. Women’s Club will host the 51st Annual Pentwater Arts & Crafts Fair from 9:00am – 5:00pm. This event is to be held on the Village Green, downtown in Pentwater.

This Fair is a juried art fair. All work must be original and of the artist’s own creation. Painting, ceramics, jewelry, photography, weaving, clothing, sculpture and other media will be available. People attending also have the opportunity to bid in a silent auction on art pieces donated by many of the participating artists. The proceeds generated will be used to fund a monthly mobile food pantry.

Admission is free. There will be a refreshment stand on the Village Green operated by the Pentwater Service Club.

St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry Passes 150 Mark in Donated Items To Community

GRAND HAVEN, Mich., MAY 14, 2015--Since 2007, an informal group of women from St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish has been knitting and crocheting hand made shawls, lap robes, afghans, hats, mittens, scarves and similar items to give veterans, infants, middle schoolers, hospitalized persons, those in nursing homes, parish members and community friends comfort.  Now in its eighth year, the group--known as the Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry--has passed a major milestone of donating 150 items to persons in the lakeshore community and as far away as Haiti.

Job Seekers Ministry hosting Breakfast for People seeking Work

St. Patrick and St. Anthony Parishes in Grand Haven, MI are having a breakfast for people seeking jobs/work. This breakfast is hosted by Job Seekers Ministry on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 8:30 – 10:00am at the Parish Family Center located at 920 Fulton St.

Pre-registration is required by May 18th and those interested should contact the Job Seekers Program at 616-842-0001, ext. 143 to RSVP for the breakfast.

The Job Seekers staff will work with individuals to prepare them to re-enter the job market by helping them with resume writing, coaching, interviewing techniques and job matching. They will spend up to three times with any one individual to help them. This event is open to the general public.

Job Seekers has partnered with Michigan Works, Catholic Charities of West Michigan, Employment Alliance, along with the Grand Haven Community Foundation to make these programs available for people seeking employment.
