State cancels wigwam wedding in Holland State Park

HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) - The wedding at a wigwam built illegally in Holland State Park is canceled.

The state has given groom Jared McMillan until July 1 to tear down the 30 foot tall wigwam.  They are denying his request to delay the deadline until after his August wedding.

"Me and my fiancee want to use it as an altar," says McMillan. "Anyone with imagination could see why it would be a glorious altar.  But, it's coming down. It will be down by July 1."

The wigwam evolved out of a fort McMillan says he and some other boys built and played inside nearly 10 years ago.

"The structure does need to be removed," says Mary Detloff from the Department Of Natural Resources. "We have received several complaints from the neighbors. [It's a] fire hazard, public nuisance and eyesore.  It doesn't belong in the park."

The DNR has already fined McMillan for cutting down trees in the state park to fortify the wigwam. Detloff says McMillan is welcome to hold his wedding in the park, but not in the wigwam.

"We are happy to accommodate him either at the beach or a pavilion," says Detloff.

"They keep saying, 'Policy, policy, policy,'" says McMillan. "It's putting policy before people, in my opinion."

McMillan says he can't get married at the wigwam before the July 1 deadline because his fiancee is a camp counselor and has no time off until August.  His brother is also in the Air Force and can't come home until August.

McMillan says they'll probably plan a more traditional wedding, but that will take months to organize and probably won't happen until next year.
