State considers expanding gay rights | News

HOLLAND (WZZM) -- Gay rights issues will take center stage again at Holland City Hall during a public hearing to discuss non-discrimination laws.

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is holding that hearing to discuss whether to expand the state's civil rights laws act, to include protections for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people.

Over the past year or so gay rights groups have had major differences with the City of Holland. In 2011, the group wanted sexual orientation to be included to the city's ordinance for fair housing, employment, and education. The city council rejected the request in a five-to-four vote.

Tuesday night, the State Department of Civil Rights wants to hear what the public thinks on similar issues.

The hearing is from 7pm and 9pm in council chambers at Holland City Hall. That's located at 270 South River Avenue in Holland.

Representatives with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights as well as the City of Holland will be present. Public comment is encouraged.

According to officials, the plan is to file a report with the state based on public sentiment on this issue, statewide.
