From Hudsonville to Zeeland: All lanes open on Chicago Drive by Nov. 21

Early this week, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will complete the $8.5 million investment to reconstruct and rehabilitate M-121 (Chicago Drive) from 37th Avenue in Hudsonville to Main Avenue in Zeeland, Ottawa County. All lanes will open on westbound M-121 today, and all eastbound lanes will open this coming Monday. The remaining work includes paving driveways, installing guardrail and pavement markings and general project clean-up. The project consisted of cold milling and asphalt resurfacing, concrete pavement repairs and shoulder upgrades. In addition, seven intersections were realigned (76th, 72nd, 64th, 56th, 48th, New Holland, and 40th avenues) and Michigan Left turn lanes were added. Other improvements with this project include corridor safety/geometric upgrades, drainage upgrades, and pavement marking upgrades. MDOT will complete bridge repairs on the eastbound M-121 bridge over the Macatawa River in 2012.

Research and experience have shown that installing Michigan Left turn lanes relieves congestion and increases safety by reducing the number and severity of crashes. On roadways where crossovers and Michigan Left turn lanes have been added, crashes have been reduced 30 to 60 percent overall. The greatest reductions are in rear-end and head-on crashes during left-turns (60 to 90 percent reduction) and right-angle crashes (60 percent reduction). For more information, visit the MDOT Web site.
