ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow visited the Lakeshore for the third time in about six months Monday.
Stabenow visited the facilities at Zeeland Farm Services, a manufacturer of grain and soy products.
She unveiled a new initiative called 'Grow It Here, Make It Here,' promoting alternatives like soy over oil, as a base for product materials like plastics.
If approved, the initiative would provide a 30% tax credit to new or expanding businesses that focus on bio-manufacturing and research.
There are about 80 companies throughout the state that could benefit, like ZFW. Stabenow says the plan could create upwards of 100,000 new jobs.
"We are looking at what's called bio-based manufacturing. Using agricultural based products like soybeans to replace oil in plastics and its happening right here in Zeeland... the forefront both in Michigan and internationally," she said. "It allows us to create jobs with our strengths which are making things and growing things."
