FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Ottawa Schools has selected the former director of finance for Holland Public Schools as its new assistant superintendent of finance.

James English, who has been Holland’s finance director since last August, was chosen to fill the vacancy that was created when David Zimmer retired as West Ottawa’s assistant superintendent of finance in August of 2010.

“He brings a wealth of school finance expertise to us,” said West Ottawa Superintendent Tom Martin. “Jim is highly regarded in school circles as an expert in school finance and we’re really excited about his joining us.”

Indeed, English led the design of Holland’s $35-million high school renovation and also implemented initiatives there that saved the district more than $2.5 million. While serving as assistant superintendent of finance and operations for Wayland Union Schools from 2004-10, he helped put together a successful $40-million bond campaign and also helped institute cost savings there.

English was business manager for Summerfield Schools in Monroe County from 2002-04 and was a junior high math teacher at Jenison Public Schools from 1997-2002.

He won the 2006 Bridges to the Future Award from the Association of School Business Officials and the 2006 and 2010 Meridian Award from the Michigan School Business Officials.

English has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Hope College, where he graduated magna cum laude, and a master’s degree from Grand Valley State University’s Seidman School of Business. He and his wife have three young children.
