MAX bus ridership experiences decrease
News

HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Transit officials blame several factors for a drop in bus ridership in Holland since July.

Leaders of the Macatawa Area Express, or the MAX, say the bus service lost some riders because the organization, Kandu, closed this year. It supplied jobs to people with mental or physical disabilities, who often used the bus service.

Service is down 5.7 percent, from 382,696 to 360,693 riders.

MAX officials say a stronger economy, fewer students riding the bus and lower gas prices have also contributed to the decline.

Now, the MAX is spending $20,000 on new TV advertisements through a deal with Charter, but officials say it's not related the dip in ridership. While overall ridership is down, the number of people using the bus service at night has increased, officials said.
