HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two candidates are running to be mayor of Holland.

It's a nonpartisan race between current Mayor Bob Vandevusse and city council member Nancy De Boer.

De Boer says she is the first woman to be running for mayor of Holland.

Vandevusse took over as Mayor after former Mayor Kurt Dykstra resigned earlier this year.

"Since I was mayor pro tem, I became mayor on July 1, effective with his resignation," says Mayor Vandevusse. "It's something I've enjoyed very much all 24 years as a council member, has been very satisfying, Holland is a great place to live, and I appreciate being part of its government."

"(It would) be a real honor. I wouldn't want people to vote for me because I'm a woman, I want people to vote for me because they think I would be the best leader, and I've never been one to start with my gender in any kind of issue," says De Boer. "I really want everybody to come together. Holland is a non partisan council and I think it's really important for us to all represent different perspectives."

Both candidates say that working on a major improvement project at the Holland Civic Center is a top priority.
