Cruise ship departs after conditions forced longer stay in Holland

HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Passengers aboard the Pearl Mist were only supposed to stay in Holland for a few hours -- but their visit turned into an overnight, 33-hour stay.

Conditions finally calmed enough for the cruise ship to continue its journey around 5 Thursday afternoon.

It had been there since Wednesday morning.

There were 215 souls aboard the ship. The Holland Visitors Bureau helped everyone with their-longer-than-expected stay in the city, helping coordinate transportation and giving travelers information about where they might go out to eat.

By Thursday morning, the crew believed they'd be able to leave around noon.

By 2 o'clock, the weather still hadn't cleared. The passengers waited patiently on board. It wasn't the ideal situation for them, but for Holland, it's been a great way to showcase, the city.

The next destination is Mackinac Island. Due to the delays, they were forced to give up a stop in Sault Ste. Marie and will skip another port before ending their trip in Toronto next week.
