My Town Holland: Overpass repairs shut down Washington Avenue for weeks

HOLLAND, Mich.— Drivers heading through Holland will want to avoid Washington Avenue under U.S. 31 for the next couple weeks, as crews begin repairing an overpass damaged by a scrap metal hauler last week.

Starting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, all lanes of Washington Avenue will be closed under the highway for repairs.  During the project, a lane of southbound U.S. 31 will also remain closed, as well as the ramp from northbound U.S. 31 to northbound Washington Avenue.  The work is expected to wrap up by July 1.

A Padnos truck had its boom up when it drove under the highway, smashing into its steel beams.  The overpass will need permanent repairs and beam replacement at a later time.  Padnos will be charged for the repairs, which are expected to cost approximately $400,000.
