Man threatens customers with store knife

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A man is facing felony charges after allegedly using a knife to threaten people inside a grocery store.

It happened just after 12 a.m. Friday at the Family Fare on Butternut Drive. Investigators say the suspect had to be tazed before he was taken into custody.

It was a late night or very early morning for anyone to be buying groceries. However, investigators say one man wasn't looking for a bargain; he was shopping for trouble.

"It appears the suspect was able to take the knife from off the shelf in the store," says Lieutenant Mark Bennett with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. "The knife was being offered for sale, it's a cooking knife with an 8-inch blade."

The 20-year-old suspect wasted little time before allegedly turning the knife on others.

"It was clear to the customers and employees that were victimized that he definitely had a knife and was displaying that in a threatening manner," says Lt. Bennett.

About a dozen people were inside at the time. Some evacuated as instructed by dispatch, but others remained in the store. When deputies arrived on the scene, they say the suspect did agree to put down his knife, but still wasn't ready to give up.

"He ultimately did drop the knife after throwing some other shelf articles at the deputies," says Lt. Bennett. " After he dropped the knife he did continue to resist. A Taser was deployed and shortly after that he was taken into custody."

Investigators say the suspect had also been holding onto a case of beer, although they say he was already intoxicated. His motive was not immediately clear.

"If the intent was robbery or if the intent was just some damage inside the store," says Lt. Bennett.

Fortunately, no deputies, employees, or customers were injured. A few hours later, it was back to shopping as usual at the grocery store. The suspect is facing felony assault charges. He's expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
