Hope College CASA Summer Program to Explore “Farm to Table”

HOLLAND – The elementary-age students of the Children’s After School Achievement (CASA) program at Hope College will take a closer look at a crucial part of everyday life through “Farm to Table,” exploring where food originates and learning about making good nutritional choices.

More than 90 area students will be participating in CASA’s six-week summer session, which begins on Monday, June 20.  The program will include trips to area farms—with a chance to pick fresh blueberries—and a visit to Holland’s farmer’s market, as well as presentations focused on diet.

News Release:

Waukazoo Elementary secretary Suzanne Coney and teacher Lynne Gallagher couldn’t help but tear up when Cathy Courey explained to Gallagher’s third-grade class on Wednesday that there is no cure for diabetes.

Coney and Gallagher have both been touched by the disease – Gallagher has a daughter with Type 1 diabetes and Coney helps two students in Gallagher’s class deal with the disease every single day.

Courey, executive director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Great Lakes West Chapter, wasn’t telling either woman anything they didn’t know.

Patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphomas, other blood cancers, and immune system disorders will often require a marrow transplant.  Unfortunately, only 30% of patients in need of a marrow transplant will find a matched donor in their family.  The other 70% turn to the National Marrow Donor Program Registry to search for an unrelated donor.  Righ

Red Cross needs help in West Michigan

The American Red Cross is asking residents help throughout West Michigan. The recent snow storms and icy traveling conditions have canceled or shut down many of the previously scheduled blood drives. Due to these cancelations the Red Cross was unable to collect an expected 28,000 pints of blood.

The Red Cross is offering from now until February 26th to all whole blood donors, a chance to win an all-expense paid trip for two to see the Division 1 Men’s Basketball playoffs, as well as a 250 dollar Meijer gift card.
