Meijer generates nearly $6 Million for Midwest food pantries in 2014

The Meijer Simply Give program – held three times a year – generated nearly $6 million in 2014 for food pantries throughout the Midwest, bringing the program’s overall donation total to nearly $14 million since it began in November 2008.

The retailer’s most recent campaign, which ended in January, was the most successful holiday campaign in the program’s history, resulting in a total of more than $1.8 million for hungry families.

Greater Ottawa County United Way will host the 4th Annual LIVE UNITED Community Baby Shower during the week of February 9-14, 2015. Donations received from the public will benefit babies, young children and their families. When families receive baby essentials free of charge, they can use their resources for crucial needs such as food, transportation, and housing.

Five locations will accept donations during their business hours from February 9-14. In Grand Haven, donations can be dropped off at: Tri Cities Family YMCA, Anytime Fitness, and Loutit Library. In Holland, donations can be dropped off at Chico’s and DeNooyer Chevrolet. Donation suggestions include (ONLY NEW ITEMS CAN BE ACCEPTED): clothing, educational toys and books, car seats, high chairs, hygiene items, diapers and wipes. Perishables and used items cannot be accepted.

My Town Holland: Guided snowshoe walk on Jan. 17

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Explore the winter wonderland and a piece of West Michigan history with a guided snowshoe walk at the historic VanRaalte Farm this Saturday.

The community is asked to call to register to experience a guided snowshoe walk this Saturday at the Historic VanRaalte Farm.   A naturalist will lead the one-hour tour, pointing out signs of wildlife and how the animals use snow for shelter.  

This snowshoe walk takes place Saturday, Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the historic VanRaalte Farm, located at 1076 16th Street in Holland.  The walk is free for Friends of DeGraaf Nature Center and $3 for non-members. My Town: Mail-in cancer tests, produce programs get state funding

LANSING, Mich. – Making fruits and vegetables more readily available, cancer screenings by mail, health coaches and exercise programs are just several of the local initiatives getting funding from the Michigan Department of Community Health.

The MDCH recently announced 44 projects are getting approximately $1.34 million, including a dozen projects in West Michigan.  The grants include:

The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division are sharing their top tips to stay safe in this extreme cold.

"As we saw last winter, these arctic blasts can create hazardous situations," said Capt. Chris A. Kelenske, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the MSP/EMHSD. "Citizens are encouraged to monitor local weather reports and follow the appropriate steps to stay safe during these extremely cold and potentially life-threatening temperatures."

Exposure to these subzero temperatures could potentially cause frostbite and hypothermia, as well as create hazardous driving conditions.

My Town: Sculptors transform ice into art Jan. 9-10

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Crown Motors invites the community art made out of ice Friday, Jan.9 from 6 p.m. to  8 p.m. on 8th Street in Holland.

The ice sculpting continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with professional demonstrations taking place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A freestyle competition will run from 12:30 p.m. through 4 p.m.

Dress warm for the frigid temperatures to witness the transformation of 300 pound blocks of ice into amazing works of art with the use of chainsaws, chisels, torches and more.
