Hope College announces Spring Film Series at Knickerbocker Theatre

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland will continue its tradition of showing contemporary and independent films with a Spring Film Series featuring four films from Monday, May 13, through Friday, June 8.

The series includes “Barbara” (May 13-18), “Girl Rising” (May 20-25), “Future Weather” (May 28-June 1) and “Triumph of the Wall.” All films will be shown at 7:30 p.m.

Degraaf Nature Center offers summer nature classes for children

 

HOLLAND, Mich.-- This summer, Degraaf Nature Center invites community children to take part in their summer nature classes! 

Classes include Preschool Nature Study, Curious Kids, Wilderness Survival, and Kayaking. This year, there will also be some new, one-day classes. Classes are listed in the Holland Recreation Spring Bulletin; children must be three years or older.

World Red Cross Day is May 8, and the organization is encouraging you to celebrate its founder’s birthday by donating blood.

Henry Dunant founded the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement after witnessing a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy in 1859. Dunant, a Swiss businessman, organized local people to come to the aid of the injured soldiers.  When he returned to Geneva, he called for the creation of a national volunteer relief society to help during wartime.  Today, more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies exist worldwide.

Wading in a Frog Pond

DeGraaf Nature Center in Holland invites the community to Register to take part in this free Wading experience on Saturday, April 27 at 8pm. For persons age 6 years & older accompanied by an adult.

Participants will meander on the grounds searching for signs of spring. This is the perfect opportunity to discover native toads & frogs, along with salamanders, emerging from their forest homes slipping down to the ponds to locate their mates & lay their eggs.  Be prepared to dress for the search, bring a flashlight & wear wading boots. The critters found will be placed in observation tanks for identification, then released.

Meet at the Nature Center & form a car caravan, traveling south 5 miles to Far View Nature Park.

Free program helps home and business owners deal with mercury

(ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY COMPANY)– The Environmental Quality Company is proud to partner with The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Mercury Collection Project.

This is an on-going effort to collect and properly recycle mercury.  Small and large business operations have traditionally been overlooked during mercury collection events.  The project’s objective is to address this issue and promote a long-term solution for easily collecting and recycling of mercury.  The program is free to anyone located in Michigan – residents included. 

The program is easy.
