Ottawa County Department of Public Health opening new office

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—The Ottawa County Department of Public Health is getting ready to move into a new space in Grand Haven.

The office located at 1207 South Beechtree St. will open to the public Feb. 3.  The health department says the move is part of the county’s cost-cutting plan.

“We are moving into a new facility that better matches the services we provide in Grand Haven, while reducing costs,” said Donovan Thomas, deputy health officer of the Ottawa County Department of Public Health. “The move will also allow us to modernize our clinic and move closer to the city and better serve our residents.”

MUSKEGON, Mich.-- The L.C. Walker Arena  will come alive Saturday, Jan. 11 as young hockey players take the ice.

The Junior Jacks Squirt B1 hockey team will take on the Holland #1 team at 1 p.m.   At 2:30 p.m., the Junior Jacks Squirt B2 team will take on the Big Rapids #1 team. The fun on ice continues Sunday, Jan. 12 with the Junior Jacks Peewees, as they compete against the Big Rapids Peewee team at 2:30 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (NEWS RELEASE) – Gilda’s LaughFest has announced the talent lineup for shows in Holland and Lowell during the festival’s fourth year, which runs from March 6 – 16, 2014.

Holland shows will include Christian comic Jeff Allen, Kids Joke Night, Holland Chorale, Klompen Comedy, Laughter Yoga and community showcases. Shows in Lowell include PJ Walsh, Kids Joke Night, Laughter Yoga and community showcases.

“Over the last few years, the programming we’ve had in Holland and Lowell has grown in popularity,” said Joanne Roehm, LaughFest festival director. “As a result, we’re excited to bring more great entertainers to these communities and we’ve diversified the types of performances offered.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The two most popular baby names in West Michigan last year are reclaiming the top spot again in 2013.

“Emma” and “Liam” remain No. 1 on Spectrum Health’s list of Top 10 Baby Names for 2013.  For girls, the only new moniker to break into the top 10 was “Charlotte.”   However, seven new boys’ names made the cut this year, with only “Liam,” “Gabriel” and “Noah” returning from 2012.

Gun Lake Casino helps fill struggling families' plates

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Hundreds of struggling families will be able to fill their plates this holiday season, thanks to a $15,000 donation from Gun Lake Casino.

On Monday, Dec. 15, the casino awarded $1,500 each to 10 food pantries, including Degage Ministries in Grand Rapids, Community Action House in Holland,  Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, Hopkins Community Food Pantry, Christian Neighbors Inc. Douglas, Martin Area Resource Center, Wayland Area Christian Neighbors, Plainwell Christian Neighbors, Allegan Ministerium Central Food Pantry and Project Hope in Dorr.

“We deeply appreciate the generosity of the casino as they partner with us to help those in need in Northeast Allegan County. At this time of the year, it is a special blessing to our families,” said Mary Barnes, executive director for Project Hope. “This $1,500 donation will purchase over 9,000 pounds of food from Feeding America.”
