Volunteers Needed for Helping Hands Day

If you enjoy the outdoors, this is the chance to help beautify the trails & gardens at the DeGraaf Nature Center.

With warm weather on its way, individuals, families, groups & organizations are invited to register to help spruce up the Nature Center on Saturday, April 9 from 10am through 12pm. DeGraaf is located at 270 S. River Avenue in Holland, Michigan.

A pancake lunch with maple syrup will be provided at noon for volunteers.

Free Fishing Weekend Coming Up

For the Valentine’s weekend, it’s a free fishing weekend for residents and out of state visitors.

All fishing license fees are waived for two days in Michigan, February 13 & 14 from 6:00am – 10:00pm. This allows fishing enthusiasts to enjoy the chance to catch all types of fish on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters during their respective open season. Just remember that all regulations still apply.

Come rain or shine, families with children ages 13 & under are welcome to Main Street in downtown Zeeland on October 30.

Main Street comes alive on Friday, October 30 from 3pm-5pm with music for the holiday, yummy treats of donut holes from the Zeeland Bakery & apple cider provided by Family Fare, along with Dee Jay the clown with his balloon animal creations. Don’t forget to dress the kids up in their favorite spooky or sweet character costume for pictures by Marc Photography.

Battle Creek will play host to the Air Force F-22 Raptor Demo team July 1-5, 2015. This is only 1 of 19 events during this time.

The Air Show will show the best of the best when civilian performers fill the sky July 3 – 5 with aerobatic maneuvers that make the fastest roll-a-coaster seem like a merry-go-round.

“Even more excitement has been added to this year’s Air Show,” stated Barbara Haluszka. “We are not only going to have pyro during the Night Air Show but during the actual Air Show itself,” she said. Spectators will love the explosions and the 750 ft. Wall of Fire!

Hot Air Balloon Shows are always a Thrill

The Hudsonville Fairgrounds is the place to be on July 24, (5-9pm) and July 25 (1-10pm).

The 2015 Grand Rapids Balloon Festival, hosted by RE/MAX of Grand Rapids and presented by our numerous community sponsors, will be held on these dates. All proceeds to support the Children’s Miracle Network (Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital). Admission is free and a charge of $5.00 for parking.

There will be 30 Hot Air Balloons, Kids Stage, Vendor Bazaar, Classic Car Show, Arts & Craft Fair, Farmer’s Market and a Movie in the Park. Lots and lots of activities for kids. This Free, Fun and Family Focused event will be the place to be.

Meekhof Welcomes Constituent to Memorial Day Service

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R – West Olive, welcomed a local constituent, Ms. Charlotte Nelis to the State of Michigan Senate Memorial Day service, held yesterday on the Senate floor in Lansing and hosted by the honorable Senator Patrick Colbeck.

“It was a blessing to have Ms. Nelis join me for the service,” said Meekhof. “It is important that we never forget the sacrifices made by Ms. Nelis, Sgt. Seif and the rest of their family and friends.”

Ms. Nelis’s son, Staff Sgt. Andrew Seif, was one of the seven marines and four soldiers killed in a helicopter crash while conducting a night training mission in Florida recently.

Grand Haven High School among Top Schools in the U.S.

U.S. News and World Report has awarded Grand Haven High School the prestigious Silver Medal ranking in the latest “America’s Best High Schools” results released on Tuesday.

Out of 21,000 High Schools, GHHS ranked in the top five percent of all high schools in the U.S. In Michigan, they ranked 32nd out of 862 high schools, including charter and magnet schools, placing them in the top four percent.

Tracy Wilson, Principal at GHHS, said “We are extremely proud of our students and the staff for again attaining this accomplishment. This award demonstrates that we continue to have a program of excellence on a state-wide and national level. The ranking also affirms the K – 12 teaching staff, parents and community.”

Superintendent Keith Konarska said, “This ranking validates what we know to be true, that our district is one of the premier districts in the country. This is another great day for our school district.”
