My Town Holland: TEDx speaker to share story of survival

HOLLAND, Mich.—A TEDx speaker who is a survivor of domestic violence is coming to Holland to  support women other domestic violence victims.

Leslie Morgan Steiner will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Reach for the Stars spring benefit.  Proceeds from the event will go to the Center for Women in Transition, which provides support programs to more than 3,000 women, men and children in Ottawa and Allegan counties, who are victims of domestic and sexual violence. Last year, the benefit raised more than $85,000 for the Center.

My Town Holland: American Homebrewers Association holds beer rally March 23

HOLLAND, Mich.— Home brewers and other enthusiasts are invited to rally around beer this Sunday, March 23 at New Holland Brewing.

The rally is being organized by the American Homebrewers Association.  The event will include brewery tours, beer samples, prizes and more.  Hop farmers and local maltsters will also be offering educational sessions on the homebrewing process.  Participants are also encouraged to bring their best homebrew to share during the brewery tour.

My Town Holland: Tulip Time t-shirt design contest returns

HOLLAND, Mich.—Organizers of Tulip Time 2014are calling an all artists to help design the official festival t-shirt.

This is the second year for the t-shirt design contest, organized by Tulip Time and Ambrose.  Last year, more than 80 artists, design students and others entered the judged competition.  Organizers hope to top that number this year, with t-shirts centered around this year’s theme, “Join The Dance.”

The deadline for submissions is April 16.  The winner and runner up will be announced on April 29.  For full contest details, visit the Tulip Time website here.

My Town: American Red Cross continues history of helping

For 133 years, the American Red Cross has taken the lead in organizing an army of volunteers to help communities devastated by disasters.

Without volunteers, the organization wouldn’t function.  That includes the more than 3.5 million people who volunteered to give blood last year, providing  a life-saving resource for patients in about 3,000 U.S. hospitals and transfusion centers. 

 “While the world changes around us, our mission never does,” said Todd Kulman, communications program manager for the American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “We’re all about helping others during times of great need – and we can do that because of the generosity of countless volunteers and donors—including people who roll up their sleeve and give blood.”

My Town Holland: Maple Sugar Time on March 15 & 16

HOLLAND, Mich.-- The public is invited to experience the spring ritual of making maple syrup at the historic VanRaalte Farm located at 1076 Adams Street in Holland.

On March 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and March 16 at 12 p.m., participants have the opportunity to tap a tree, gather the sap, witness how Native Americans made sugar and then a visit the sugar house.  In the old barn, enjoy samples of ice cream topped with homemade maple syrup and check out the collection of maple syrup, maple candy and maple soda for purchase.

Admission is $1.00 per person. No registration is required,  but guests are asked to park in the 16th Street parking lot and walk to the Barn to check in.

LOWELL, Mich.-- Laughter comes with many health benefits; learn how to harness its power during a free session of Laughter Yoga, organized by LaughFest.

Join certified laughter yoga leaders and teachers to learn how the principle of "acting happiness" can help your health. WZZM 13's Alex Shabad tried a Laughter Yoga class in Holland; read about his experience here.

The class is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Tuesday, March 11 at the Gilda's Club Lowell Clubhouse. The session is free, but donations are encouraged.  Proceeds will go toward free cancer, grief and emotional health support programs offered through Gilda's Club Grand Rapids and the Lowell Clubhouse.
