Hope College Nykerk Cup Competition is Saturday, Nov. 6

HOLLAND – Hope College will host its 76th annual Nykerk Cup competition on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Holland Civic Center, located at 150 W. Eighth St.

The event, one of a variety of activities scheduled during the college’s Family Weekend, will feature more than 200 members of the freshman and sophomore classes competing in song, plays and oration. The participating classes this year are the freshman Class of ’14 and the sophomore Class of ’13.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The competition, first held on March 16, 1936, is named in honor of the originator of the program, John Nykerk, a professor, college dean and founder of the Hope College department of music.

Marriage Rendezvous coming to Holland

HOLLAND, MI - The Marriage Rendezvous is coming to Calvary Church, 400 Beeline Road in Holland on Saturday, November 6. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and the cost is just $10 per ticket.

Winning At Home, featuring nationally-known speaker, author and radio host, Dan Seaborn, has created the Marriage Rendezvous, to be an evening of celebrating marriage. It is designed to refresh and revitalize the marriage relationship with both humor and fun combined with practical information.

Dan shares two dynamic presentations that challenge couples to keep the fires of passion and commitment burning in their relationship. Throughout one evening, Dan shows how a marriage can last a lifetime and grow deeper in love with each passing year. This fun-filled and informative event is an excellent opportunity for couples to renew their commitment to each other and gain a refreshing fervor for their relationship.

Hope College Presents Talk on Civil War Native American Sharpshooters

HOLLAND - The role of Native Americans from Michigan in the Union Army will be the focus of "Forgotten Warriors: Company K in the Civil War" on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Hope College in the Fried-Hemenway Auditorium of the Martha Miller Center for Global Communication.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

The event will feature a keynote address by historian Chris Czopek and excerpts from "The Road to Andersonville" by documentary filmmaker Dr.

Hope College Van Wylen Library to Host Book Sale Nov. 1-8

HOLLAND – The Van Wylen Library at Hope College will host a book sale from Monday, Nov. 1, through Monday, Nov. 8.

The sale will offer hardcover and paperback books, videos, CDs and many LP records.  Prices are $2 for CDs, $1 for most books and videos, and 50 cents for records.

The sale will take place behind the center stairwell on the library’s main floor.

The library is located on College Avenue at 10th Street, with access to the main floor through the building’s south side.  The library is open Mondays-Thursdays from 8 a.m. to midnight, Fridays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to midnight.

Harlem Wizards game to take place despite foul weather

Zeeland, MI - The game between The Poultry Panic and The Harlem Wizards will take place tonight at 7pm as scheduled. All tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Rembrandt authority to discuss “Rembrandt’s Thinking”

HOLLAND – Ernst van de Wetering, an internationally respected authority on the 17th-century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, will present the address “Rembrandt’s Thinking: His Ideas about Light and Shadow” on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m.

Poultry Panic gear up for clash with Harlem Wizards Oct 26

The Poultry Panic, a team of 25 hoopsters devoted to mesmerizing their opponents, is prepping for its clash with The Harlem Wizards, Tuesday, October 26, 7 p.m. at Zeeland West High School.
