Pumpkinfest decorating committee seeks volunteers

ZEELAND, Mich. - The Pumpkinfest decorating committee is looking for volunteers to help prepare for this fall's festival by building scarecrow scenes.

The work starts in April and anyone is welcome.

West Ottawa kindergarten, preschool registration to be held Thursday, Feb. 3

Children will have the opportunity to visit classrooms and participate in fun activities when kindergarten/preschool registration for the 2011-12 school year is held at all nine West Ottawa elementary schools at 6 p.m. Feb. 3.

In addition, the district’s International Baccalaureate program will be explained.

Holland is Ready’s free film series returns in February with “Transamerica”

HOLLAND – Holland is Ready’s free film series returns to the Park Theatre on Friday, Feb. 4, with the 7:30 p.m. showing of “Transamerica.”

The comedy-drama tells the story of Bree, a transsexual woman who goes on a road trip with her long-lost son. Felicity Huffman, who also stars in TV’s “Desperate Housewives,” won a Golden Globe award for her performance as Bree and was also nominated for an Academy Award.

One of the major themes of the film is the personal journey toward self-discovery, both for Bree and her son as they struggle for understanding and to forge a parent-child relationship.

The 2010-11 film series is being presented by Holland is Ready, a group of community leaders working for the safety, rights and inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons in the Lakeshore area.

Dr. Seuss exhibition opening delayed due to roof leak

Inclement weather has caused a serious roof leak at Holland Museum, forcing the rescheduling of its highly-anticipated "Secret Art of Dr. Seuss" exhibition.  In addition to pushing back the official opening, the Member Preview scheduled for Wednesday, January 19, has been canceled.
 
The museum will be closed through this Friday, January 21 and reopen on Saturday, the 22nd at 10 am.  The Focus Gallery Dr. Seuss exhibit will be open at that time.
 
The museum has scheduled a "Seuss-a-bration" for Wednesday, January 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
