My Town: Free tickets still available for 'Lets Go to Bat for Kids'

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—The Media Giants and Catholic Charities West Michigan Padres will battle it out at Fifth Third Ballpark as “Let’s Go to Bat for Kids” returns this Thursday, June 26 with even more family-friendly events.

More than 1,200 people are expected to fill the ballpark for the fundraiser, which supports Catholic Charities West Michigan.  Tickets are free and can be reserved by visiting the organization’s website.  In addition to the softball game between local priests and media personalities, families may take part in a Lego building station, face painting, crafts, a doughnut dunking station and meet Crash of the West Michigan Whitecaps.

My Town: Zeeland Zoom 5K returns June 24

ZEELAND, Mich.-- The community is invited to visit downtown Zeeland Tuesday night  to support the participants of the 5th Annual Zeeland Zoom 5K race and walk.

The Zeeland Zoom 5K will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The 2014 route starts mid-block on Main between Elm and Church.  Runners will travel east on Main to Fairview, south on Fairview to Lincoln, west on Lincoln to Elm, north on Elm to Central, east on Central to Park, north on Park to Main and finally west on Main to the finish line.

My Town: Guiding Light Mission thrift store reopening June 17

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Guiding Light Mission will celebrate the grand reopening of its thrift store and a new partnership with Holland Rescue Mission on Thursday, June 17. 

The celebration will start at 12 p.m. at the store. Appetizers and refreshments will be available.

Guiding Light Mission Upscale Thrift Store carries a variety of items for all ages, including dishes, hardware, sporting goods and jewelry, as well as new furniture and mattresses, which come with free delivery.

Donations can be dropped off at the Guiding Light Mission Upscale Thrift Store, where donors can receive a tax deductible receipt for their contributions. The store is located at 1435 60th Street SE in Kentwood.

My Town: Local First offers family-friendly Local Treasure Hunts this June

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Local First has put together Local Treasure Hunts for families to do this June.

Participants can choose from two hunts: one in Grand Rapids and one on the lakeshore. Hunters can enter to win prizes in each hunt by texting in codes at each location. The hunts started on June 1 and will conclude at 11:59 on June 30.

MUSKEGON, Mich.— Grab a rod and head out onto the big lake this weekend for Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend.

On June 7 and 8, the state will be waiving fishing license fees.  Free Fishing Weekend applies to residents and out-of-state visitors on inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish.  All fishing regulations still apply.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, our state offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, with more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams. To find inland lakes in your area, click here.

My town: Memorial Day Parade in Zeeland

ZEELAND, Mich.-- The public is invited to the Memorial Day Parade in Zeeland on Monday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The procession will kick off at Main Avenue at Centennial Street, proceeding west to State Street, then south to Central Avenue and east onto Maple Street. A ceremony honoring all who have served and continue to serve our country will take place at the Lincoln Street Cemetery following the parade.

My Town: More houses on display during Spring Parade of Homes

 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—From toxin-free to maintenance free, dozens of West Michigan homes will be open to the public this Memorial Day Weekend as part of the Spring Parade of Homes.

Even more houses and condominiums will be on display this year- 78 homes from West Olive to Ada.  The homes will be on display through June 7.  They range in price from $100,000 to more than $1 million.
