Our recent blast of lake effect snow is putting us back into an active winter sports season at Pigeon Creek Park in Holland.  This is especially good news considering the investments made at the park this fall.  The Lodge underwent a complete renovation, increasing capacity, functionality as well as ascetics.  Ski renters will enjoy well maintained and new equipment with 80 sets of skis and poles plus 100 pairs of boots added to the stock for the season.

The park boasts over 10 miles trails for hiking, snowshoeing and skiing. Three of these miles are groomed and lit for evening skiing.  Two lit sledding hills allow the young and young at heart to play well into the evening.  The Lodge, open until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, offers ski and snowshoe rentals, a concession stand and a place to warm-up.

Cross country ski clinics are available at Pigeon Creek to those interested in learning or refining their technique.  Spaces are available in beginner and intermediate clinics scheduled for February 2.  The beginner class is at 9:30-11am and the intermediate class meets at noon.  Register by calling (616) 738-4810.  Participants can provide their own equipment or rent skis at Pigeon Creek Park.  The cost for children and adults is $8 per person.

Additional clinics are scheduled for February 9 and 16.  Details are at miOttawa.org/parks.

Pigeon Creek County Park is located in Olive Township on Stanton St. between 128th and 120th Ave.  Winter sports conditions are updated daily at 616-738-9531 and at facebook.com/ottawacountyparks.

The Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Commission boasts 6400 acres of parks and open spaces.  Operations, improvements and programs are funded by the parks millage and grants from various sources.  The investment ensures opportunities for recreation and education for both today and for future generations.
