Holland Farmers Market announces results of The Carve III

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A total of 26 student carvers entered into the first-ever U.S. National Collegiate Carving Competition for fruits and vegetables at the Holland Farmers Market, making works of art using fresh ingredients from the Market.  In addition, 9 contestants entered the People’s Choice competition to see who could create a carving a cut above the rest and win the most votes from the public.
 
Cavers entered the competition from across the country and participated in three separate events, including the compulsory event, the singles event, and the team event. The works of art were judged by a team of professionals on first-impression, utilization of fruits and vegetables, detail and knife skills, use of color, structure, and creativity and artistic impression.

Creative Dining Services Honors Hope College Employees for Volunteerism

HOLLAND – Creative Dining Services (CDS) has honored several of its employees based at Hope College for their volunteer commitment to a local food bank.

Zeeland-based CDS manages the college’s Haworth Inn and Conference Center as well as the dining services at Hope, which include the Phelps Hall Dining Hall, Cook Hall Servery and Kletz Snack Bar.

The team of employees, a mix of hourly staff and managers, received the company’s 2010 “Community Service Award” for assisting First Reformed Church and Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Zeeland in distributing food provided through the churches’ sponsorship of a truck from Feeding America - West Michigan Food Bank each month.  The staff volunteers, often accompanied by members of their families, help organize and distribute the food.  A total of 22 employees have volunteered for the effort, four to seven each month.

Hope College Community Campaign Scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 13

HOLLAND – On Wednesday, Oct. 13, representatives from Hope College and leaders from local businesses will engage in a long-standing tradition of visiting more than 200 area businesses in Holland and Zeeland seeking contributions to the Hope Fund for the 2010-11 Community Campaign.

The Community Campaign on behalf of the Hope Fund began more than 30 years ago as a way to engage community leaders with Hope faculty and staff in building and maintaining relationships between the community and the college.

Bake Sale to benefit Lindy VerBeek - Friday, October 1

Holland, MI - Friends of Lindy VerBeek will be holding a bake sale on Friday, October 1 at 5:00pm outside the gate at the Holland Christian High School football game. Last year Lindy conquered breast cancer but is now faced with stage IV brain cancer.

She and her husband, Dusty, have a six year old daughter and two year old boy/girl twins.

Bake Sale proceeds will be donated to the VerBeek family to help cover the cost of medical bills and travel expenses (to Mayo Clinic, etc).

27 boxes of shoes donated to Holland Rescue Mission

HOLLAND, MI - Since mid-summer, Gazelle Sports in Holland has donated more than 27 boxes of gently used shoes to Holland Rescue Mission - and those shoes are being put to great use!

"First, we offer them to our current residents, many who own one pair of shoes. The others we are able to sell at our thrift stores or bail for a profit which goes toward feeding and sheltering the homeless," commented Bob Koelndorfer, Warehouse Manager at Holland Rescue Mission.

The message is greater than just shoes.

"Gazelle Sports is passionate about the community and with the Holland Rescue Mission around the corner, it just makes sense to support the work they're doing," said Vicki Kavanaugh of Gazelle Sports.

27 annual "Pumpkinfest Celebrates Michigan" in Zeeland

Zeeland, MI - The 27th annual "Pumpkinfest Celebrates Michigan" in Zeeland will take place September 30th through October 2nd. The traditional Powder Puff football game between the junior and senior girls happens Wednesday, Sept. 29, 8 p.m., at Zeeland Stadium. Admission is $3. No passes will be accepted. Proceeds go to the Class of 2013.

A homecoming assembly at 1:45 p.m., October 1, will stoke excitement for the Dux homecoming football game versus Wyoming Park. Game time is 7 p.m.
