Grant to Hope College from ExxonMobil Supports Schools’ Participation in REACH

HOLLAND – For the third consecutive year, ExxonMobil has provided support for high school teachers and students to learn about the natural and applied sciences as participants in the summer research program at Hope College.

A $7,000 grant to the college is supporting the participation of students in Project REACH (Research Experiences Across Cultures at Hope) this summer.  The award was presented at Hope on Wednesday, July 20, by Matt Van Zanten and Abigail Albers, representing J&H Oil, a local ExxonMobil branded fuels marketing distributor.

Bloomin’ 5K Fun Run/Walk Deadline Approaching

News Release:  The Bloomin 5K will take place on July 23, 2011 at 8am in Holland, Michigan.  The Bloomin’ 5K discounted registration deadline is July 22. Pre-registration fee for the event is $20 and day of registration is $25. Race organizers highly recommend registering early for cost savings benefits and day of race convenience. Registration is available online at http://www.hollandinbloom.org/ or registration forms are available at Holland City Hall, Gazelle Sports, Holland CVB and various area stores.

The Bloomin’ 5K will begin at City Hall and wind through historic Downtown Holland, along the Heinz Boardwalk and back to City Hall (course map available at http://www.hollandinbloom.org/) . This fun run/walk event hopes to raise awareness and funds for the Holland In Bloom (HIB) organization.

Citizens Police Academy seeks new applicants

News Release: Applications are being accepted until Friday, August 19th for the fall Citizens Police Academy of the Holland Police Department.

Applicants must be 17 years or older, reside in Holland, a neighboring township, or Ottawa County, or work in Holland.  Police will perform a brief local background check.

Now in its fourteenth year, the academy is offered once a year and students will meet for 10 weeks from 6-9pm on Mondays, beginning September 12th.

Participants will learn about various divisions of the department, including drug enforcement, gang activity, domestic violence, K-9, drunk driving, probation and the court system, and tour the Ottawa County Central Dispatch and the county jail.

20th Annual Michigander Bike Tour passing through several My Town communities

ADA, MI - Approximately 400 bicyclists will be enjoying part of Ada Township’s non-motorized trail network this week, as part of the 20th annual Michigander Bicycle Tour, sponsored by the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance. After staying overnight at the County fairgrounds in Lowell on Tuesday, July 19, tour riders will be riding west on Bailey Drive into Ada Township on Wednesday morning, where riders will use the Township trails on McCabe Ave., Conservation St. and Honey Creek Ave., on their way to the City of Rockford and ending that day in Ravenna.
