My Town Holland: $40K grant approved for DeGraaf Nature Center improvements

HOLLAND, Mich.—DeGraaf Nature Center is growing with the help of a $40,000 grant from Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.

The funding approved Wednesday will go toward purchasing a neighboring property, which the nature center will transform into a safer entryway for school children and other guests.

The house is expected to sell for $123,000. The rest of the purchasing money will come from donations and a nature center founding grant.

“We are very excited and thrilled that we have been selected to receive this funding, which is needed to support a number of critical improvements to the DeGraaf Nature Center that have been planned for many years. The gains will be enjoyed for generations to come at this very popular natural refuge in the heart of an urban environment,” said Holland City Manager Ryan Cotton.

DeGraaf Nature Center welcomes thousands of visitors each year.

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Coppercraft Distillery, a Holland-based distiller of quality spirits with a focus on local ingredients and production, was recently awarded a gold medal for its vodka by TheFiftyBest.com.

TheFiftyBest.com hosted a domestic vodka tasting during which 45 contenders were evaluated for the distinguished Best Domestic Vodka awards for 2014.

“We are very honored for our vodka to receive a gold medal from TheFiftyBest.com,” said owner and co-founder Walter Catton. “Perfecting the flavor of the vodka was the most time consuming process of any of our spirits to ensure a smooth, clean tasting vodka that can stand on its own. This evaluation reaffirms our belief that this is a world-class product.”

My Town Holland: Moose Lodge provides comforting donation for kids

HOLLAND, Mich.—  Children forced from their Holland area homes because of fire will have something comforting to cling to, thanks to the Tommy Moose program.

Last week, the Loyal Order of the moose Lodge #1116/ Women of the Moose #2087 Holland Lodge donated a dozen Tommy Moose stuffed animals to the Holland City Fire Department.  The plush toys will go to children dealing with trauma, distress or anxiety, to help comfort them.

The local Moose Lodge plans to donate its next batch of stuffed animals to Holland paramedics.

The Holland Moose Lodge was established in the mid-1900s and contributes to the community by hosting a variety of benefits, cleaning area highways and other volunteer programs.
