Holland In Bloom Bloomin’ Beautiful Best Front Yard Contest Announces First Winner!
Holland In Bloom Bloomin’ Beautiful Best Front Yard Contest Announces First Winner!

June 14, 2011. Holland, Michigan. Congratulations to Lois and Charles Hunt, winners of the Holland In Bloom Bloomin’ Beautiful Best Front Yard Contest for June. Located at 619 Myrtle Avenue, an abundance of perennials are the highlight of this garden for all seasons. Tall evergreens provide year round color and sometimes hide perennial beds that are ready to burst into summer blooms. White iris with purple fringe, budding peonies about to unfurl into deep pink blossoms will soon replace spring bulbs and flowering shrubs. Later Michigan holly will add fall color with deep bronze foliage.

With a legacy of gardening from both their families, Lois and Charles moved to Holland in 2002 to be near their children and grandchildren. After an extensive search for a property on which to build a home and establish a year round garden, they found a flat sandy lot near Lake Macatawa. They planted several types of evergreen to prevent sand from blowing into their new home. Next came favorite perennials including fragrant peonies, Bertram Anderson sedum and white phlox in park like beds with benches and trellises. Boxwood accents beds filled with old-fashioned bleeding heart and graceful astilbe. Urns overflow with an assortment of colorful annuals. In shadier areas tiarella's white blossoms and chartreuse lady's mantle add unexpected color. Grassy areas “provide pools of tranquility and rest the eye," according to Lois. The Hunt's property was once the home of Zwiep's Greenhouses, a family owned nursery that specialized in annuals, lilies and tulips from 1958-1976. The site of this winning garden continues to delight visitors, young and old in all seasons.

Holland in Bloom judges included local gardening experts Steve Zwiep and Shelly DeVries, both from the City of Holland Parks Department and local celebrity judge Lauren Stanton from WZZM.

The Bloomin’ Beautiful Best Front Yard Contest began in May and continues through the summer for neighbors, friends and families to nominate the best front yards in the city of Holland. Nomination ballots can be found in downtown area galleries, shops and restaurants and on line at www.hollandinbloom.org.  Nomination ballots can also be dropped off at the Holland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau 76 E. Eighth Street. Three more winners will be chosen for the month of July and August. Ballots for July should be submitted by June 27. The winners will receive a "This Yard is Bloomin' Beautiful" sign to display in their yard, a gift certificate to Jonker's Garden and an invitation to the America In Bloom Judges' Reception in August. Each month the first place winner will also receive a framed, hand painted drawing of their home by local artist Carolyn Stich.
