Saint Mary's School To Host Popular "White Elephant" Event June 29 & 30
Saint Mary's School To Host Popular "White Elephant" Event June 29 & 30

SPRING LAKE, Mich., June 14, 2012 – For the first time in fifty years, Saint Mary’s Parish School is separating its crowd-pleasing, annual “White Elephant Sale” from its annual “Festival.” Event organizers are hoping that more members of the general public, as well as church members, will attend and take advantage in tough economic times of gently-used items at bargain-basement prices before the main summer travel season begins.

The White Elephant Sale will be held June 29 and 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at Saint Mary’s School, 421 East Exchange Street, Spring Lake.  Local Spring Lake residents Jennifer and Tom Ladd, together with Jim and Becky Twa, are serving as co-chairpersons for this year’s event and also the Saint Mary’s Festival. The Festival  will be held from noon to 10:00pm on July 14th on the Saint Mary’s School grounds, complete with games, prizes, a cake walk and the band Soul’d Out playing in the entertainment tent.

Anyone from the region is encouraged to drop off gently-used items for the White Elephant Sale, which will then be sold to the general public.  Donation drop-off began June 11 and will continue up to June 25, which is just prior to the event date.

The annual White Elephant Sale has attracted hundreds of people each year due to the breadth and depth of unique items dropped off for the event.  In past years, this has included everything from an oversized saltwater fish tank—to a complete underwater diving collection of wet suit, flippers, mask and gloves—to rare, Polish hand-painted porcelain collectables.

“One year, we even sold a pop-up camper, so if anyone wants to donate large items, we hope they do so because all funds raised go to the operating expenses of Saint Mary’s School,” said Jennifer Ladd.

The entire Saint Mary’s Elementary and Junior High School buildings will set the stage for this year’s event, which will feature the following items:  electronics, books, movies, clothing, linens, bedding, furniture, children’s toys, games, housewares, kitchen appliances, dinner serveware, china, hardware, sporting goods and Christmas items.
