The Macatawa Area Express (MAX) named Dorothy DenBleyker of Holland as its honorary "3 Millionth Passenger" and her granddaughter Mandy Beroza of Allendale the winner in MAX's "Catch 'em Riding" Facebook photo contest.

For the contest, people were asked during Passenger Appreciation Week (Jan. 16-20) to post photos to MAX's Facebook page showing them or their family and friends riding the MAX. The photo with the most "likes" received the honor of being named the symbolic three millionth passenger to represent the number of rides the MAX has given since its inception in the year 2000.

Beroza's posted photo received 57 "likes" on MAX's Facebook page. The second and third place runner ups for the most "liked" photos were Jean Kibble and Cheryl Doan Scheureman, respectively.

The Holland area transit system kicked off the weeklong celebration with a ceremony and reception on January 16, and held free public presentations and events all week. The event culminated with MAX serving up a celebratory cake and coffee at the Padnos Transportation Center on Friday, January 20, where the winner of the contest was announced.

A montage of photos submitted for the contest showing pictures of passengers riding the MAX was unveiled in the Padnos lobby.

Beroza's photo showed a picture of her grandmother, Dorothy DenBleyker, taking a trip with her four great grandchildren. DenBleyker, who lives in Holland, no longer drives and takes the MAX several times a week on appointments, sometimes with her great grandchildren in tow.

MAX began operating three simple fixed routes in 2000 and only 150,000 rides annually when it was operated by the City of Holland. In 2006, an Authority was formed by the City of Holland and Holland Charter Township to oversee the transit system. Two years later, the fixed routes were expanded from three to eight and ridership grew rapidly.

In 2012, MAX expects to provide 450,000 rides. Approximately six percent of residents use the MAX, which is twice the national average for comparable cities and small urban transit systems.
