Saint Mary's School to Display Photos of Community Service for Catholic Schools Week

SPRING LAKE, Mich., Jan. 3, 2012 - In observance of the 2012 "Catholic Schools Week," the Parent-Teacher organization at Saint Mary's Parish School is planning to display photo boards in the church's gathering space to highlight the many community service projects that children at the school participate in throughout the year.

Catholic Schools Week runs January 29 through February 5.  Saint Mary's Parish School is located at 421 east Exchange Street in Spring Lake.

Another display will feature various pictures of general school life and feature things like children participating in sporting events, color days, spirit days, guest speakers, dances, the Jingle Bell Parade, Parade of Saints, class celebrations and more.

As the new year unfolds, children from the school will visit the Cathedral of Saint Andrew in Grand Rapids.  Saint Mary's Student Council members will attend mass there on January 31, along with all other Catholic school Student Council members throughout the Diocese of Grand Rapids.

During the mass at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, Saint Mary's students will be responsible for an offertory gift.  The children have selected as their 2012 offertory project the support of the Holy Childhood Association (HCA), with a focus on Ecuador.  Each student will be earning money for their special "quarter coin cards" so they can fill the slots and donate toward the HCA offertory.  Each slot represents a specific item their quarter donation will buy for a needy family in Ecuador - a loaf of bread, milk, rice, plus other food staples for daily living sustenance.

HCA is an international organization founded in 1843.  HCA has, as its members, children throughout the U.S. who attend Catholic elementary schools and various religious education programs.  The purpose of the organization is to help students become aware of the importance of missions and missionary work within the Catholic church and its outreach services.
