MAX Transit Reaches Ridership Milestone for 2011
MAX Transit Reaches Ridership Milestone for 2011

The Macatawa Area Express (MAX) Transportation Authority saw record ridership for fiscal year 2011, which ended September 30, with 418,496 boardings. That is the highest annual ridership for the transit system, representing a 23.30 percent increase over the 2010 fiscal year total.

MAX saw its highest ridership month on record with 38,674 in March 2011. Average monthly ridership is now nearly 35,000. The ridership spike is attributed to an increase in new passengers using the transit system, and current passengers using the service more often.

MAX also is expected to hit another milestone - 3 million rides -- since it began operating in the year 2000. The transit system is expected to reach 3 million boardings sometime in January 2012, and has already begun planning a special passenger appreciation day for that milestone.

Another trend in ridership is the shift from use of premium demand response service to fixed bus routes. Fixed route ridership now comprises almost 76 percent of total ridership, with 24 percent using the Reserve-A-MAX service.

MAX operates eight fixed bus routes with hourly service that run Monday through Saturday. Reserve-A-MAX service is available for ADA eligible passengers, persons 70 years or older, and persons whose origins or destinations are greater than ½ mile from a bus stop.
