Harbor Humane Society Supporters Fund New Roof for Shelter
WEST OLIVE, MICH. – Thanks to generous Harbor Humane Society supporters who answered a desperate plea for donations, the animal shelter will soon have a brand new roof.

When last year’s unseasonably rough winter weather resulted in huge ice dams, leaks, water damage and loss of heat to the Humane Society, shelter staff had no choice but to ask the public for help. They sent an emergency appeal, asking for the $50,000 that local roofers said it would cost to properly repair the underlying damage and replace the roof.

“People really stepped up when we told them that we had 200 to 300 furry little faces on any given day who we’re charged with keeping warm and dry and safe,” said Rick Homan, HHS board president. “It was humbling to know that we could count on the public’s support when we really needed it. Our roof was in such dire repair due to age, but the unprecedented snowfalls were creating additional expense for us, and we were very concerned about structural damage, mold and other health and safety issues developing for our staff and the animals.”

But Homan and the staff can rest easy. They raised enough money to meet their goal. Construction will begin in early October and be completed by the first of November, weather permitting. The old roof will be removed and any structural repairs beneath the roofing will be completed before the new roof is installed. In addition, the fascia and soffit will be repaired and replaced as needed, and rain gutters will be installed with wire mesh to help keep the gutters clean.
