ZEELAND, Mich.--  A Zeeland farmer is doing his part to help Third World  families in need.

Alvern Poest has donated $2,500 to Paradise Bound Ministries to provide food, medical care and housing to struggling families in Guatemala.

“I think this a great opportunity,” Poest said. “This organization builds houses in Guatemala. We went a few years ago, and it was a great experience. This money will give other people in the community a chance to go there and help people that don't really have anything.”

America’s Farmers Grow Communities works with farmers to support organizations like Paradise Bound Ministries. The program offers farmers a chance to win $2,500 which is then donated to the farmer’s nonprofit organization o f choice.  Since its inception in 2010, America’s Farmers Grow Communities has led to more than $16 million in donations to more than 6,500 nonprofit organizations nationwide.

Greg Smith of Belding is among the other Michigan farmers to win funding for a nonprofit of their choice.  To find the full list of winners, visit the program site here.
