HOLLAND, Mich.—West Ottawa High School students will be dancing the evening away this Friday to help children at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

This is the second year West Ottawa’s National Honor Society has held the Dance Marathon to benefit pediatric patients.  Hanna Paquette will be among the students dancing from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“I dance because if these kids can fight through sickness, the least I can do is support them for six hours," said Paquette, a West Ottawa junior. “It’s something bigger than me and everyone loves supporting the kids.”

The National Honor Society hopes to top the $8.477.15 it raised during the event’s inaugural year last year.

Participants will learn how to line dance, make crafts for patients, listen to staff band Vinylicious and hear stories from families whose lives have been impacted by the hospital.  They must stand during the duration of the benefit.

The Dance Marathon started in 1991 at Indiana University in memory of Ryan White, who contracted the HIV/AIDS virus through a routine blood transfusion.  The nationwide movement now includes more than 150 colleges and high schools.
