'Gran Fondo' in West Michigan Saturday, June 29

There will be some “Gran Fondo” in West Michigan this Saturday, June 29.

Roughly 1,500 cyclists have registered to ride in the inaugural Gran Fondo, which will benefit skin cancer research by the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Participants are coming from Canada and 15 states, including Oregon.

Riders will choose between three courses spanning 12 miles, 40 miles and 80 miles. The 80-mile route takes cyclists through the Grand River Valley, which cuts through My Town Grand Rapids Central, My Town Walker, My Town Grandville and My Town Coopersville.  They’ll turn around near Lake Michigan at North Ottawa Beach.

The 40-mile trek takes riders through the villages that run along Grand River Valley toward Lake Michigan.  Before reaching Spring Lake, participants will turn north and join the same return route as 80-mile riders.

The 12-mile journey takes cyclists out of the city and onto the trails of Millennium Park.

All races start at The B.O.B. downtown; the longer races begin at 8 a.m. and the 12 mile trek starts at 9:30 a.m.

While registration is now closed, the public is invited to the After-Sparty (party) in The B.O.B. parking lot, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The celebration will include live music, street food stations, samples of Michigan microbrews and wines, and viewing of the Herman Miller Brickyard Criterium. Admission is free; proceeds from food and beverage sales will also go to skin cancer research.
