My Town: West Michigan home to two of the top corn growers

West Michigan is home to two of the top corn growers in the state.

Hoeve Farms in Holland and Scott Jirgens farm in Kalamazoo were among the winners of the National Corn Yield Contest.  Hoeve Farms harvested 266.8 bushels of corn per acre, earning it third place among irrigated farms in Michigan. Scott Jirgens’ farm yielded 221.9 bushels of corn per acre, putting it in third place among no-till/strip-till irrigated farms in the state.

This was the 50th year for the National Corn Yield Contest.

My Town: New Holland Brewing celebrates expansion

HOLLAND, Mich.— New Holland Brewing is celebrating its newly expanded business.

Monday, the brewery opened its new 1,600 square-foot merchandise store and tasting room, called Sidecar.  The new storefront is located next to New Holland’s pub on East 8th Street in downtown Holland.

Visitors to Sidecar can check out New Holland’s full line of merchandise, as well as a variety of beer and spirits to go.  The tasting room is expected to open later this month.

"This is a great opportunity for us to move our merchandise to an adjacent space where people can browse without feeling crowded," says Dave White, vice president of retail operations. "Additionally, it’s a great place for customers to hang out and grab a drink if they’re waiting for a table at the pub."

Sidecar will be open seven days a week.  The space will also be used for beer and spirits release parties.

My Town Holland: Hudsonville Ice Cream introduces new seasonal flavors

HOLLAND, Mich.—Hudsonville Ice Cream is giving customers a taste of winter with its new collection of ice cream flavors.

This year’s flavors include:

  • Pure Michigan Winter Campfire — Vanilla ice cream with marshmallow, graham cracker pieces and milk chocolate flakes. (Winner of the 2014 Pure Michigan Winter Flavor Contest.)
  • Peppermint Stick — Vanilla ice cream with candy cane pieces.
  • Chicago Caramel Popcorn —Caramel ice cream and crunchy clusters swirled with a salty caramel ribbon.
  • Pumpkin Pie —Traditional pumpkin pie flavor with pieces of pie crust.

These seasonal selections are available in grocery stores and ice cream parlors in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.

GRAND HAVEN, MICH., SEPT. 18, 2014―In observance of United Nations’ “International Day of Peace” worldwide, the general public is invited to a local observance at St. Patrick―St. Anthony Parish to join in the dedication of a hand-crafted Peace Pole on Sunday, September 21st at 4 p.m. on the outdoor south side of the church, at 920 Fulton Avenue in Grand Haven.

“Pope Francis has asked all people to observe the upcoming International Day of Peace no matter whether they attend church or not and we welcome anyone who is interested to join us as we dedicate this long-lasting monument to peace,” said Sally Moser, an International Day of Peace event organizer with St. Patrick-St.

My Town: Meijer to hire thousands ahead of holidays

 

WALKER, Mich.—  A Walker-based retail store is hiring thousands more workers ahead of the holiday season.

Meijer recently announced it plans to hire more than 10,000 additional employees for stores in five states. Nearly half of the new hires, approximately 4,800 people, will happen in Michigan. The additional employees are needed to cover duties newly opened stores, as well as the upcoming busy holiday shopping season.  Meijer opened or is opening nine new stores in 2014; the retailer plans to open additional locations in 2015.

The openings will be for a variety of positions, from cashiers to meat cutting.  The majority of positions will be part time and seasonal.  Interested candidates can apply online on Meijer’s website

Meijer currently operates 213 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

My Town: Restaurant honored for dedication to new splash pad

ZEELAND, Mich.—A Zeeland restaurant is being honored for its dedication to bringing a splash pad to the city.

The West Coast Chamber recently presented The Farmhouse with its IMPACT Award for raising funds and awareness for the splash pad.  The Farmhouse raised more than $5,000 for the splash pad, with employees donating their time, tips and profits to the project.  Ageless Autos Inc., West Michigan Poured Walls, Gebben’s Concrete, The Soft Spot and Conan Excavating all matched The Farmhouse’s donation, bringing the total to $10,018.

The Zeeland Splash Pad will open to the public July 28. The celebration on Main and Elm streets will coincide with Zeelmania.

The IMPACT Award recognizes companies and organizations for an outstanding contribution to the community through the sacrifice of time, money, resources.
