Holland/Grand Haven unemployment dropped in March

The unemployment rate dropped statewide in March, compared to February.  Across Michigan, the jobless rate fell to 9% from 9.4% the previous month. In the Holland / Grand Haven are, the rate fell from 7.2% to 7.1%.

Gentex reports all-time record net sales for any quarter

Gentex Corporation today reported all-time record financial results for any quarter in the first quarter ended March 31, 2012.

For the first quarter of 2012, the Company's all-time record net sales for any quarter increased by 16 percent to
$290.7 million compared with $250.9 million in the first quarter of 2011.

The gross profit margin was flat on a sequential basis at 34.7 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the fourth quarter of 2011, primarily due to the impact of annual customer price reductions, which were offset by purchasing and manufacturing cost reductions. The gross profit margin decreased on a quarter-over-quarter basis from 36.0 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to 34.7 percent in the first quarter of 2012, primarily due to annual customer price reductions, partially offset by purchasing and manufacturing cost reductions.

CityFlats Hotel Awarded Good Earth Keeping Award

LEED Gold Certified CityFlatsHotel was presented with the Good Earth Keeping Award at the Stars of the Industry Awards Dinner on Monday night by Governor Rick Snyder. This awards dinner was part of the Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism that took place March 25th – 27th.

The Good Earth Keeping Award recognizes lodging properties for developing a culture focused on environmental management practices that improve everyday operations while maintaining quality service. The program must demonstrate success in one or more of the following areas: energy conservation, solid waste reduction, effluents and emissions, and water conservation.

Baker College announces new truck driving program in Zeeland

Baker College of Cadillac and Anthony Luurtsema Truck Lines (ALTL) will celebrate the grand opening of a truck driving training facility in Zeeland on Thursday, March 15, 2012. The new venture, called Baker College Trucking and Logistics, is a partnership between Baker College of Cadillac and ALTL, a provider of transportation and supply chain management services. The general public and the media are invited to the grand opening celebration from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., 9548 Adams St., Zeeland.

Luciano Hernandez is keen to make the world a better place through design. Founded in 2001, his Zeeland-based industrial design firm, Tiger Studio, is a testament to that zeal.

“We’re passionate about design,” says Hernandez. “Our company is about inventing new things and making our clients successful in the products we design -- we’re about creating jobs and creating new markets.”

Hernandez and his team of 15 employees design their hearts out at the Zeeland office and rotate manning their new Grand Rapids satellite office on 38 Commerce Ave. SW, which opened in December.
