Grant to Hope College supports summer program for high school students

HOLLAND – For the fifth consecutive year, ExxonMobil has provided support for high school students to learn about the natural and applied sciences as participants in the summer research program at Hope College.

A $7,000 grant to the college supported the participation of five high school students in the REACH (Research Experiences Across Cultures at Hope) program this past summer. The award was presented at Hope earlier during the current fall semester by David Handy, a territory manager with ExxonMobil, and Matt Van Zanten and Abigail Albers, representing J&H Oil, a local ExxonMobil branded fuels marketing distributor.

Santa Claus visits for Holland Parade of Lights December 3

HOLLAND, Mich.—Santa Claus will take a break from his busy Christmastime schedule to visit Holland Tuesday, December 3.

The man in red will be the guest of honor during the city’s Parade of Lights, which starts at 6:30 p.m.  Nearly 80 entries are expected to light up the streets, including floats, bands and vehicles, all decked out in holiday lights.  The parade kicks off at the corner of Eighth Street and Columbia Avenue.  The procession will continue down Eighth Street until it reaches the Eighth Street Market Place.

Visitors are also encouraged to stroll through Centennial Park to take in the snowflake light display and city Christmas tree, which is already trimmed for the season.  You can also spot Santa climbing up the chimney of the James DeYoung Generating Plant.  The holiday lights displays will be up and running throughout the month of December.

Vote for your favorite executive 'stache

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—November is coming to an end which means the ‘staches are coming off!

Five executives from West Michigan have been growing mustaches for Movember, a month-long campaign to “change the face of men’s health” by raising awareness of health risks.   The men have been posting their progress on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s Facebook page.    The final mustache photos will be posted on the Facebook page on December 2 for a public vote.  Visitors can pick their top two favorite ‘staches by “liking” the appropriate photos.  The vote runs from 11 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.  Tuesday.

Some West Michigan restaurants are honoring miliatry members  this Veterans Day by serving up free meals.

Lakeshore Partnership is also offering a free meal to veterans at 19 of its local McDonald’s restaurants.  Military identification is preferred, but not required.  Participating locations include:

KENTWOOD, Mich.-- EmploymentGroup, a solutions-oriented staffing and outsourced services firm, announced the launch of its “5 in 5” scholarship program Tuesday.

The new initiative is designed to mark the Company’s 55th anniversary as a leading regional provider of business staffing solutions and help equip Michigan-based community college students to enter the workforce with the skills and resources they need to succeed.

For each of the next five years, beginning with the current academic year, three winning students will be named recipients of “5 in 5” scholarships totaling $5,000.  In applying for – and ultimately using the funds – students will be encouraged to consider creative ways to enhance their ability to make an effective impact in today’s workplace.

ALDI hiring for Holland store

HOLLAND, Mich.—ALDI is hiring in Holland.

The company will hold a hiring event for its Holland store on Monday, November 4, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.  ALDI is looking for cashiers and shift managers. Both positions pay $10.50 per hour; staff working at least 20 hours a week will be eligible for full health insurance, dental coverage and a 401K.

Applicants must be 18 years or old, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a drug screening and background check and be available to work anytime between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. All employees must be able to lift 45 pounds.  Retail/management experience is preferred for the respective positions.
