WEST OLIVE ā€” One West Michigan county plans to study whether it can feasibly tap into its historical roots in agriculture to create a new business incubator aimed at creating a sustainable economic future.

Ottawa County this summer commissioned a $30,000 feasibility study that's examining the potential for an agricultural technology business incubator to support innovators and entrepreneurs. If it finds validity in the idea, the feasibility study also will identify capital and ongoing costs and recommend a potential business plan on how to fund the development and operations of a business incubator.

Ottawa County would only proceed with the project if the feasibility study, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows clear potential for success, said Mark Knudsen, director of the planning and performance improvement for the county.

Proceeding with the project "is not a cut-and-dry decision right now," Knudsen said.

"The real determining factor in all of this is if we have the critical mass to make it work," he said. "It really depends on whether there is critical mass with the number of entrepreneurs in the area to sustain it."
