Auditions for the Holland Chorale Scheduled for January 4

Holland, Michigan - Area singers are invited to audition for the Holland Chorale's January-April performance season. The audition will be held the evening of January 4, 2011 at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. Eighth Street, Holland.
The winter season's repertoire will feature performances of Joseph Haydn's Mass in Time of War and Vaughan Williams' Toward the Unknown Region with orchestra. Another highlight will be the Holland Chorale's March 2011 performances at Carnegie Hall. Singers chosen from the audition will be eligible to tour to Carnegie if desired.
The Holland Chorale is a distinguished Michigan choral ensemble that draws singers from as far away as Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, and East Lansing.

Downtown Holland's beloved annual Sinterklaas Procession will undertake a new route this year and incorporate elements both new and familiar, including the official lighting of the tree (with carols) in Centennial Park and a meet and greet with Sinterklaas at the Holland Museum afterward.

Follow the Town Crier, Sinterklaas on his white horse, along with the Mayor in a horse-drawn carriage as they make their way to Centennial Park to light the tree! Hear carols by the Holland Chorale's "Chorale Kids" and  get candy from Sinterklaas' mischievous Piet helpers!

Christmas Vespers is a Hope/Holland Tradition

HOLLAND - Christmas Vespers has been a Hope College tradition approaching 70 years.

The 2010 services will be held Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4-5. Participating groups will include Hope's College Chorus, Chapel Choir, and Symphonette, as well as organists, the flute choir and brass ensemble.

Thousands of members of the Holland and Hope communities gather for the services each year. For many families, the event has been a highlight for generations.

Christmas Vespers was first held on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, at 4 p.m.

Book compiles papers on Dutch migration to North America and Australia

HOLLAND – A new book published by the Van Raalte Institute at Hope College offers a variety of perspectives on the Dutch immigrant experience.

Through its Van Raalte Press, the institute has published “Across Borders: Dutch Migration to North America and Australia,” a collection of papers that were presented during the international biennial conference of the Association for the Advancement of Dutch-American Studies (AADAS) held in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, in June 2009.  The volume features 18 essays grouped within six themes:  an overview; Canadian history; literature and language; immigrant experiences in the United States; labor organizations; and recent trends in migration and memory.

The book was edited by Jacob E. Nyenhuis, Suzanne M. Sinke and Robert P. Swierenga.  Nyenhuis is director of the A.C.

Hope Jazz Combos to Perform on Monday, Nov. 29

HOLLAND – Hope College Jazz Combos will perform a concert on Monday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.

The public is invited.

Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant coming to Holland

Multi-platinum  recording artists Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith have announced plans for a multi-city U.S. tour that will reunite these two iconic singer/songwriters for the first time on the road together (for a  non-holiday tour) in more than two decades. Kicking off in early  February, the “2 Friends” tour is slated to hit approximately 20 cities across the country including Holland.

The two first toured together in 1982 on Grant’s Age  to Age Tour.
