West Ottawa High School Jazz Band places second at CMU music competition

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - West Ottawa High School's top jazz band made history this weekend in a music competition.

The band, comprised of students chosen through auditions, took second place in Class AA at Central Michigan University's recent Jazz Weekend. That's the highest placement that band has ever received. The jazz band placed third in each of the two previous years.

"The students have made great strides in the last few years and they put on an impressive performance (at CMU this year)," said director Michael Hamann.

The Jazz I Saxophone Section also received second place for Outstanding Section in Class AA, marking the third section award received by Jazz I students in the past four years. In addition to performing, students were able to learn and be inspired by listening to numerous performances by other high school jazz bands, jazz combos and big bands from CMU, and the guest artist, jazz trumpet legend Bobby Shew.
