--------------NEWS RELEASE-------------------

ZEELAND, Mich.--  Pumpkinfest will be celebrating its 30-year anniversary this October 2, 3 and 4.

What started out as a unique way to get people into downtown Zeeland has turned into an annual tradition, where family, friends and guests come together and enjoy a celebration of fall activities, fun events and great food!

Part of the draw that keeps Pumpkinfest new and fresh each year is the long-standing tradition of featuring displays throughout downtown Zeeland based on the annual theme.  The 2014 theme is "Pumpkinfest Pride...Celebrating 30 Years!" This year Pumpkinfest, in conjunction with the Holland Area Arts Council, will carry on the tradition with a new program called, Pumpkinfest Avenue Art. Pumpkinfest Avenue Art will build on the past but add a completely new style of art and décor throughout downtown Zeeland.  The new program will provide centerpieces for the annual theme while engaging local and regional artists, individuals, and groups, to get involved and be part of the process.  In addition, Avenue Art will enhance the beauty of downtown Zeeland and provide locals and visitors a unique and artful Pumpkinfest experience.

Pumpkinfest Avenue Art is a collaboration that invites individuals or groups to participate by applying their concept or idea to be part of the Avenue Art.  A brief overview of Pumpkinfest Avenue Art is as follows:

  • An application is available for anyone that would like to be part of Pumpkinfest Avenue Art including professional artists, families, church groups, schools, etc.
  • The applicant must create and submit a design based on this year's theme of "Time."  Application deadline is August 1, 2014.
  • All applications will be reviewed by the Pumpkinfest Avenue Art Committee.
  • If applicant is accepted, they will be provided with a stipend and structure on which to build their design.  The structures will be custom made by K2 Metals, LLC out of Zeeland, Michigan.
  • Once completed, the Avenue Art will be displayed throughout downtown Zeeland during Pumpkinfest 2014 for all to enjoy.
  • Each Avenue Art display will also be juried by a Pumpkinfest Avenue Art representative and awards will be provided for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place.

"We are so excited to be working with Holland Area Arts Council to bring this fun and unique concept to Zeeland Pumpkinfest," commented Carla Flanders, Pumpkinfest Director. "We look forward to getting the local community as well as regional artists and individuals involved and can't wait to see the great designs that will come our way!"

"Giving artists the opportunity to 'strut their creative stuff' is part of the Arts Council's mission and working with the enthusiastic and receptive Zeeland community is always a treat," commented Lorma Freestone, Holland Area Arts Council Executive Director.

Mary Sundstrom, Holland Area Arts Council Program Director is "excited about getting more connected with Zeeland's artist community and look forward to working with them."
